How to setup subwoofers for my desktop speakers for CRT TV

Hi, I currently bought some old speakers for my CRT (Bose Video Roommates) but the thing is I
heard they don't have great low end and is known for mediocre low-frequency sound.

What's a subwoofer? and how do I add to the existing setup to make better or more complete or the best way to go about this?

How can you connect are attach it together? Is it hard?

Can anyone offer me some advice, a guide, videos, etc.?

A subwoofer is a separate speaker (usually only one, although they can be used in pairs) used to reproduce the lowest bass notes. Usually (but not always) has its own built-in amplifier.

What will you be connecting the speakers to (e.g. computer, DVD player, etc)? That will help us to determine if a subwoofer can be added.

To my CRT xbr400. For gaming primarily with ps2 and gamecube.
 
OK, you can use a subwoofer, provided you use the TV to control the volume, and change AUDIO OUT to variable (see page 29 of the manual). To connect it, you'l need to find a subwoofer (you can purchase new or used) that has left and right low level inputs (this would be via RCA inputs, the same type as on the back of your TV where you connect your video games). You'll also need a dual RCA cable to run from the TV's audio out to the subwoofer. If the subwoofer also has a set of low level outputs, you can just connect the Bose speakers to those. If it doesn't have those outputs, you'll need to get a pair of Y cables - one male to two female - and connect those to the audio outputs on the back of the TV, then connect the left wire for the subwoofer and the speakers to the Y cable on the left output, and the same for the right output.

Once everything's connected, set the subwoofer's crossover frequency to around 100hz, turn everything on, play some music through the PS2 and adjust the levels of the speakers and subwoofer so that the bass of the system sounds natural. You don't want to adjust it so it's booming; when adjusted properly you shouldn't be able to tell that there's a subwoofer at all, just that the system now plays lower notes than it used to. If you have (or can download) the subwoofer manual, read it, most manuals give decent tips on how to adjust them.

Feel free to post a message asking if a particular subwoofer will be suitable, if you find something that looks good.
