How to test McIntosh 240 Tube Amp?

And here's one that just popped up in Austin for $1800:

This is an original fully functioning vintage and classic McIntosh tube power amp. Tested on a Variac with no issues and have listened to it in stereo and enjoyed it's very musical fidelity my MX110-z (also up for sale on craigslist). Although the pictures show the physical condition, the amp has pretty decent chrome and most of the lettering in tact as shown. I have provided as good of close up pictures as I could for you to actually see the outside and inside condition. Due to the age of the unit, it is being sold as is but it sounds exactly as it should, a real fine sound. The tubes included are all the tubes shown. 6L6 output tubes are brand new Tung-Sol 6L6GC-STR with cryo ordered from upscale audio. Priced to sell fast, cash only, no trades. Call or text if you have questions or to set up meet.

I’m keeping my Dad’s Acoustat electostatic speakers because they sound great and also sentimental to me because of the memories of listening to them with my father. I would be interested in keeping the McIntosh but don’t think it would drive them well? My Dad was using a Hafler high wattage amp to drive them.

I am a newb with tube amps but is seems to me that some are making it into a voodoo science. I can test caps for ESR no problem and soldering on these amps would be a breeze.

Thanks again all!

I'll echo the first post and say that if you're going to sell it, don't restore it. Serious buyers will have their own ideas about how they want the restore to be done, and it won't be the same way as it will be done if you do it, if that makes any sense. It's a very nice unit, if you can afford to compensate your mom for it, it will make a nice, functional memory of your dad and provide a lifetime of music. If you aren't into stereos however, ignore that and get a good price for it, cheers.

It depends a little on which Acoustat and how loud you want to listen, but probably not a great match. Which Acoustat model?

I haven't owned any of the Spectra series, but am pretty sure that the ~55wpc MC240 is going to be on the weak side (based on my 2+2s anyway).

You can always try them and see what you think, if you like the pairing then keep the amp also.

Yep, I had period of time with exactly the same pairing years ago and it sounded good but nothing really special. Then I swapped the power amp with DBX BX-3, then to Denon POA, then to SAE 400wpc. It opened up more and more and sounded fantastic.

Expect your up to $2500 guy to vigorously point out the pitting of the chrome. Others here can tell you how much of a difference that will make. My guess is that you are under two grand now but that's just a WAG. Sadly I've never bought or sold Macs.

I have sold a few vintage Mac tube and SS pieces. Vintage Mac buyers could chisel Mt. Rushmore. Never heard so much bellyaching. FWIW, the OP's 240 looks to be in good vintage cosmetic condition so the seller should resist the nickel and dimers. $2,500 is a good deal for someone who knows how to restore. A full set of caps and other items will cost $250? Not much.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to ship the amp? I’m worried about damage. Thanks!

Don't ship. Don't sell on ebay. Sell locally. They are rare and everyone worth his AK membership knows what it is. You will get your $2,500...in cash.
