How did society become aware of the whole Audiophile CDP in the Sony playstation SCPH-1001,thing? I thought things like this were fairly secretive you know just known to the audio community, no now we have people listeing the SCPH-1001 on Ebay as

"SONY PLAYSTATION PS1 SYSTEM SCPH 1001 AUDIOPHILE RARE!"

I suppose this may create a threat to my obtaining one for less then 15 bucks eh? I have a SCPH-7501 that I should just mod out like the 1001 but I would like to have the original I am gonna fab a case for one and make a nice DIY CDP out of it,removing the audio rca's and putting in XLR jacks the video rca stays so I can watch the cool designs on a tiny monitor :D

I guess someone is doing their homework. Follow the auction of something you want to sell and if it gets the money, figure out why. Now more and more of these units will have this designation. I hate it when folks do their homework.

They sold enough of that serial PS1 that they're plentiful at every flea market and dirt mall in the country. I doubt the number of people wanting one for stereo purposes is likely to exhaust the supply or make much of an impact on value outside of maybe that auction site.

The internet buzz tends to build from time to time around certain products that are perceived to be "giant-killers" at a price attractive to the common man. IMHO, some of them are a good value, some are head scratchers - but you see it happen again and again.

Whether the hype is warranted in this case I couldn't say. How good could it possibly be as a CD player? Really? Time marches on with regard to digital hardware. I've always gotten the impression that modest modern CDP or DVD player can whip a very good thirteen year-old hi-fi one. The PS1 wasn't designed as a hi-fi piece and if it's something extra-special in that regard (and maybe it is), it's nothing more than an industrial-engineering accident. I can't see this one for anything but novelty.

Of course there's people modding them. That's the other side-effect of the "audio bargain fad component, albeit one that usually foils the "high-bang, low buck" angle that initially attracts the cultish attention. More power to 'em. I'll probably occasionally keep trying these types of fads myself.

I'm sure it is a mistake. You say that a modern CDP's can whip a very good 13 year old Hi-Fi one, well this is vise versa a 15 year old game system said to keep up with a $6k worth modern as of last year CDP and at 15 bucks a pop hell why not give it a go, what have you got to lose??

I picked up a 7501 and was disgusted, hopefully the RCA'd SCHP-1001 will do much better.
