HPM-100 "upgraded" with HPM-60 crossover?

I have the possibility to purchase HPM-100's. Seller says they have been "upgraded" by a pro with HPM-60 filters.

Does that make sense?

I have no experience with HPM series, I listen to Wharfedale Dovedale 3, Goodmans Magnum K or for more detail to DM2's.

To me--NO--that doesn't make sense, but I am not intimately familiar with both crossovers (although I have heard both speakers in stock form). Listen and hear what they sound like--if the price is right, you can always bring them home and restore them to original.
 
Okay, that's interesting ! So based on your comments, I look at the pictures:

So suddenly I get a thought.... and look at a HPM-60 speaker image:

Do I have to suggest to the seller that his HPM-100 labeled speakers are in fact HPM-60 boxes that are wrongfully labeled HPM-100...???
 
Looking at the images closer I think:
  • Boxes, woofer and mids are HPM-100
  • Tweeter is HPM-60, crossover is HPM-60
  • The HPM-100 front pads have been covered
So if that's right, would it make any sense to "ugrade" a HPM-100 with a HPM-60 tweeter and crossover?
 
Sounds like what you are looking at are "Franken-Pioneer" speakers. Unless I got one hell of a deal on them and the drivers worked, I'd pass. But if the deal is good enough, the drivers alone may be worth the price of admission and you could part them out for $$$, or find another pair that needs some work, and you will have parts on-hand. I know the woofers alone can be worth quite a bit of $$$.
 
Hi all, thanks a lot. I was just asking by accident here but now I am really happy I did not spend all the €€€ for something half baked. However, many old speakers and receivers are tweaked and I was just wondering maybe that was some kind of a magic tweak :)

Yes these drivers fetch good money, With good dust cap and no damage. I just sold a spare woofer for $130. Get the correct crossover, Recap, And see if you like them.
 
Checked the SM for both speakers. the 100 crossover freq 3k,4k,12K. The 60 1.2K, 4K,12K. Possible better sound moving the crossover down to 1200hz for the LF driver. Depends on the midrange driver and the range it can cover. Both Service Manuals are up on HiFi Engine.com. Both speakers have pots to adjust the mids and highs.

I finally went with some Kef Cadenza's, less then half the price, and fit well with the SX-6000.
