Humming Sound coming from my tuner, Whats Going On.

I have a GE Console Stereo and am getting an annoying humming sound. I have the back off the unit so I can see the guts of the tuner. When listening to the Stereo I get a humming sound but if I touch the metal chassis the humming will magically stop. Whats going on here and how can I make it stop for good, the humming sound is getting old and I dont want to reach around the back of the unit everytime to remedy the issue.

Most likely, it sounds like a ground loop problem. Try turning the 120 volt power plug around in its receptical.

Possible pics maybe??
 
On some of the consoles the phono is hooked to the powerside, where you have to turn on the motor to get it(amp) to run in the phono position. Check for a bad or missing ground wire from the chassis of the turntable to the "receiver". Can you take a few pics of the inside, back so you'd have a backup set of eye's looking at it?

+1 on flipping the power plug in the receptacle.

It's a ground problem.

The best thing about saying, "Oh, it's a ground problem."? In one way, shape or form they all are! You may have to do some fast selling of course, but any problem in a consumer electronic unit can be said to be ground related. And you can get a lot of street cred by an authoritarian pronouncement. Who knows....you could score dates.

I don't want to put evil thoughts in your ears, but let's say a neighborhood goofus with a totally cute girlfriend - how'd he get her?? - tries to show you what's wrong with the gear he made her mad by buying in the first place. Better yet, you take one look, said "ground problem" which is great because now you are a much more appealing potential spouse then the schmuck probing the guts of a hot unit with an all metal screwdriver you handed him. I guarantee in five minutes the stereo id destroyed, his hair is on fire and you've got that girl's phone number.
