Hush - Deep Purple

I was listening to the single "Hush" by Deep Purple from a greatest hits CD I bought some time ago. I really like the song, but the quality of the recording has always seemd less than top-notch. Is it just me, or anyone else noticed this? I also like they're single "Kentucky Woman", but notice the same lack of quality in the recording. Could this be poor engineering/production? I'm not an expert, and I've never listened to these on vinyl. Sounds like a garage band recording.

Those songs are from their Rod Evans/Nic Simper days, their first few albums. Lower budget, earlier technology than the later DP albums. I have the original vinyl here, of "Book of Taliesyn" from '68.

....additionally, most "Best Of" albums tend be of lower SQ than the originals (although there are exceptions). If you have a half decent turntable setup try buying the original single or failing that "Shades of Deep Purple" on vinyl. You will get a small improvement, also, you can then record to cd yourself and tweak the sound, even with basic ADC programmes.

P.s. Shades also has the track Mandrake Root on it :tresbon:

Hush probably is the most overplayed DP song on a radio.
Sometimes it looks like they wrote nothing except Hush, Woman from Tokyo and Smoke on the Water.

At least you get the originals!

I only get the flippin' Kulashaka version of Hush on the radio....missing verse, less accomplished musicians:no:
On the plus side more dynamic SQ

They didn't write Hush, it was Joe South (or Kentucky Woman, actually, that was Neil Diamond). Lots of covers on the early albums- Beatles, Tina Turner, others.

I'm a big fan of (almost) all things Ritchie Blackmore.....but I never wanna hear "Hush" or "My Woman.." ever again.

I haven't played my LP or the 45 on the radio in at least 25 years but my memory says the radio sounded better than the LP.

I found "Book of Taliesyn" years ago in a cut out rack of LP's. Thought I'd hit the jackpot. An old friend had a copy several years back and I couldn't wait to hear it again. Remember some good song on it. Turned out to be the worst LP I own. Low recording levels with a ton of noise. I bring it out every now and then thinking maybe it got better, kinda like cheese. Not!! I gave up looking for another copy years ago.

You own a bootleg copy, they were of poor quality - very common in the 1970's

I'll be danged, Joe (The Games People Play) South? I knew about Neil Diamond, but not that. Kewl.

"Hush" was first recorded by Billy Joe Royal, who also recorded other Joe South songs, such as "Down In The Boondocks" and "I Knew You When". Joe didn't record his own version of these songs until later on.

I grew up with that Joe South album, my Dad gave it to me a million years ago. I bet I still know every word & guitar lick.

I keep hearing highway star on tv ever since rock band had the song. It's been quite overplayed.

It'd be nice if 92.5 would play child in time once in a while.

And heaven forbid the radio stations actually play a rainbow song. Its like the radio world wants to forget that band ever existed.

At least in cincinnati that is.

Two words, folks: UK Harvest.

I'm sure that's right. I've never heard a Harvest copy, but feel certain the Tetragrammaton versions were made from 2nd Generation tapes sent here from the U.K. BTW, Tetragrammaton was distributed by Warner Bros. and one of its principle owners was Bill Cosby, who was on the WB label.
