I ain't buying it.. what to you think? (tube amps)

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
I still keep looking for another motiograph, but no dice on a single in 3 years..

This guy is in my area, and has been trying to sell this pair of amps for the last two years at the same 6K price (too high)

ANYWAY, he says all the caps and resistors were replaced by a tech with NOS caps and resistors...

Looking close, I'm not buying they were replaced.. and what good tech would approve replacing old used caps with old unused caps?

I also find it REALLY hard to believe those 12 multi section caps on the rear were found as NOS.. finding those caps used are like finding gills on a dog, much less NOS...

What do you think?

That is a lot of jack. I would also think NOS caps and resistors would have the same drifting problems as ones used.

Exactly what I was getting at, and the fact that a good tech wouldn't point that out and use them...

Realistically, with the cages, $3K would be about the top dollar I would imagine world wide, but personally if I bought them, I wouldn't give more than $2200...

It's getting a pair with the cages that adds to the value... A pair in good condition without cages usually brings around $1600 tops when you do see them in this kind of condition, and about $1200-$1400 average..

In 3 years or so, I've only seen 3 or 4 pair sell, and about 4 singles sell. A pair of empty cages can bring $300 to $500 in fair condition

AES actually lists some NOS, reformed can caps in their inventory. Take that as you will.

Maybe it was one of those guitar techs that loves old caps, or maybe the seller just demanded someone match the originals. Maybe the multi-section caps were re-stuffed. Maybe the seller demanded NOS caps and the annoyed tech re-stuffed the can caps with new parts, found that the amps worked okay, and left all the original caps in the rest of it. Maybe it's all lies. It's got an OBO - just offer what you think it's worth. I wouldn't consider the NOS replacements as adding any value, but you could ask for a close up. Should be pretty easy to spot new solder joints in something this old.

He says the high voltage caps were "rebuilt," which I take to mean that the can caps were restuffed. The film caps all look original, doubt they were changed. There are some low voltage electrolytics that don't look period correct to me in there.

Could all be BS, could be semi-accurate. I doubt that ALL the caps and resistors were changed.

Ah.. I missed the rebuilt part.. thanks for pointing that out.. so I doubt those were stuffed with old caps.. I did notice a couple newer caps in both amps, and they didn't match from amp to amp which also kind of raised a flag for me..

Keep looking James, you know eventually you will find what you want at the price you want to pay. I would assume you are in no rush as you have a great setup already.
