"I asked AI" - are we really getting that lazy?

The imagery generated by AI is often atrocious and the writing is terrible.

The headlining LLMs all excel as an Excel replacement. They’re likewise pretty useful for formatting and parsing large amounts of text.

However, none can be relied upon for technical subjects. Paid LLMs or not. All of them will hallucinate part numbers, specifications, and data. They invent claims out of whole cloth. No “I heard [this]” as a human may write on a forum, but very bold claims couched in very authoritative language. This leads people who don’t know any better astray.

And most people don’t know any better. Granted, many people also get dubious advice from forums, are poor researchers, and worse critical thinkers. They chalk it up to a lack of time but I’m not so sure about that. The thing is that there is NO recourse if it gives you incorrect information.

Try to ask your favorite LLM to name ten songs similar to one you provide. Don’t pick an extremely popular song. I guarantee you that much of the results will be entirely made up.

In time I think the world will be lulled in to asking it even the most mundane questions. So I would say yes we will not be using our brain as much to gather information. I am not sure if that is considered getting lazy or just using a different means. A lot more information will be available to us, but it will be provided by something other than a human.
It’s like the self driving cars. They are convenient, but eventually when all the cars are self driven we will not know how to drive anymore. It may take a generation or more to lose the ability, but it will happen. Again, nice but not human controlled. Eventually we will be so dependent on AI and not even realize how dependent we are. It will just be a way of life. The world may be a lot better for it ( or not ) but it is inevitable. A lot of us on here probably won’t be around when we are completely dependent on it, but my granddaughter probably will. She probably won’t even think about it while she is flying to Mars or something.
She will look at our generation the way we look at the frontiers before us who used to shoot for their food, plow their fields, and had no indoor plumbing. Would they consider us lazy?
It’s all progress. I think an overpopulated planet is more of a concern than AI.
 
AI is an extension of technology that we alreadtlyv depend on for life. Your bank, water company, electric, your grocery store are all running their operations on massive computer foundations. If there's no electricity Walmart won't let you the store, The gas station will give you no gas.

Create my own mistresses! All the positives and none of the negatives. Funny about "wish lists" — repeating in Life. We used to have ideas in school about how to create the perfect female. I won't bore you with the crazy details — the Mods would prolly send me to the Principal's Office. ;)

Hell, I ran off a couple that were about as perfect as could be simply because I was too immature to know it. One of them, for sure, each other's other half. The other half of the orange. Youth is wasted on the young.
 
It's all this flippant use of AI to create images that pollutes peoples air and water, and produces a constant drone of noise that messes with their head. And it's funny how these data centers all go up near the poorest and least represented communities, right here in America. All these rich billionaires want data centers? Let them build them right beside their own mansion. But that will never happen. Instead, they choke the life out of the EPA, to ensure they don't have the budget and the manpower to investigate these blatant polluters.

But Datacenters are a very real issue. Lack of regulation etc.

But I sorta disagree its worse than the old fashion google search.

Google search is not very democratic. The same can be same for AI of course. But FOR now AI searches are polluted with less AD's and other fluff you need to wade through.

It's all about money. If there were no money in it, there's be no data centers.

As for forgetting how to drive, my wife and I have always had manual transmissions. Now it's hard to find them and you'd be surprised (maybe not) at how many people can't drive them. Soon it will be an anti-theft device!

Big complaint I have with "AI" is that the sources are not shared, which is ALL important to validate the data using this electronic gathering op!

Then there's the built-in biases that comes with this data form of acquisition.


As per your question...I think some will take the easy route and maybe "get lazy" in the long run. :dunno:
