I bought a Luxman R1120a yesteday

I’ve restored several of these receivers and my impressions are the same as yours. The piece to find is the Dolby board accessory, it didn’t come with the receivers, it was extra.
I had a thread a few years back on a few things to watch out for on those Luxmans.
The power switches are around if you look and I would suggest the triac switch relief mod to add to your todo list.

Thanks, Glenn. I kind of wish it had VU meters instead of the LEDs. I still love it, though.

Much prefer the leds. They tell you what is going on. Meters are just eye candy and well I like it when my rig has only three lights on to let me know the preamp, power amp and CDP or TT are on. I don't need a light show but that is another discussion that has been and will be again on AK.

LED's are cool in their own right. My JVC R-S77 has them. When I first saw it in the Harvey Sound sound room, I was sold and had to have one. Still working greT since 1980!

Performance and features wise, anyone owned the both the R-1120 and the R-1120a and able to comment? I don't need a list of what is different, I know that, I'm looking for real life comments from someone who has experienced both, the pros and cons of both receivers. Thanks. Here's my R-1120. By the way, in the UK we don't tend to get power switch problems like you guys in the US, as our voltage is 240V, thus halving the current inrush at switch on.

I wonder if these were sold in 100V Japan with the same switch. Those would burn up even quicker. Good comment about that halving the inrush current.

Since you don't want to know about the outward differences, know that Luxman tried to voice their products similarly. There might be some sonic difference between these two receivers but it would be small. I don't know the outputs in the -A model but if they are the ones that are being discontinued, the TO-3-using non-A might be an easier unit to keep alive in the upcoming years since there is a good replacement available.

Hello Folks, just added one of these to my collection. It had been sitting for a long time and needed some cleaning of the volume pots.
It has a very good sound through all frequencies.
