I bought a Technics SP-25 today

www.records

Quality over Quantity
Talked to a local guy last night that told me he had an old turntable that he bought from a radio station about 7 years ago, but never used it because it was too big for his rack. I told him I was interested and went over to take a look today and see what it was. It was a Technics SP-25 with a SH-15B3 plinth and a Audio Technica 1501 Mk II arm. It was had a nice layer of dust from sitting in his garage. He wanted $60 for it and it went for a ride to my house. I cleaned it up real good and this thing is in great cosmetic condition. It didn't have any feet on the plinth, so I got some Super balls and am using those for now. I mounted a Denon 110 cart and have been listening most of the day.

It keeps perfect steady time and sounds awesome. I am still playing with the VTA on the arm, but will take my time to listen closely at the changes.

ANyone else use one of these Technics SP tables? Is anyone familiar with the AT-1501 MK II arm?

So far, this is the best $60 audio dollars I have spent in a long while. :thmbsp:

WOW!!! :tresbon:

That is of course a Major Score! :thmbsp:
I don't have first hand experience with your table/arm, but they are from the broadcast-professional ilk. Top notch heavy duty stuff.

Let us at least bask in the glow of your wonderfull addition.

LOL Damn, I knew you were gonna say that.

I currently don't have a digital camera. It broke last year and hasn't been replaced. So, I won't be able to add pics. I would love to though, because it is really a beauty. The Super Balls I bought are black and white mottled ones, so they look pretty cool under the black base.

I can't believe how the Audio gods have smiled on me this last year. I have a system that I never thought possible for a Missouri hillbilly with a plastic spoon stuck in my mouth since birth. My whole system has changed this last year.

McIntosh MC40 mono's (already freshened up) $600

Altec Model 17's 604-8G in 620A cabinets $150 (I did have to replace a HF voice coil from GPA for $95)

Sansui 1000A (using as preamp) already freshed up for $200. It also came with a donor unit that has a bad OT.

Marantz CC-65SE CD player- $20

And today this SP-25. It took the place of a Technics SL1300 that I have used for about 10 years of flawless duty. The Sansui 1000A has 2 phono sections, so I have a modded Thorens TD160 still hooked up that I bought off Agon 2 years ago.

This last year lady luck has smiled at me, I think anyway. Beyond my wildest dreams. I am feelin kind of giddy or stoked. Hell, I am 52, so I am just happy as hell.

So, is Steve´s camera is broken, let´s give him a hand here.

Attached are a couple of pics I stole from Vinylengine ( invaluable source as usual)
The first shows an SP 25 chasssis, on an unknown ( to me , that is ) plinth and arm.

The second shows an AT1005 arm. Does the 1501 look anything like this?

Thanks guys, So far I am very pleased with it. Not only because of the way it performs, but to my eyes it is a thing of beauty.

Yup - I have one with the obsidian base + SME since 1979? - I think. It has always - always been right on - never showed ANY kind of instability. Great TT - and the sound (and looks!!) are great!
