What is the deal with the fetish people (mostly Asian) have for ancient theater gear? Anything even remotely connected to Western Electric goes through the roof and off to Hong Kong. Man, I wish I could find some of this stuff to sell, it's stupid the prices these things are getting.

Why does anyone collect anything vintage? Most anything vintage has a certain value just because its old, collectable, and cool. Couple that with the fact that this kind of gear was never mass produced it is relatively rare.

In my opinion its no different than vintage cars selling for lots of money. I wish i could find a pair of these things. Not because I think they would sound better but because a old Field Coil PA speaker is cool if you ask me.

One of these sold not too long ago for over $1800. It was in a little better shape but it too had cone damage, just not as much or severe. It also had another metal plate that bolted onto the back and a better identification plate. I assume they are quite rare.
 
Anybody check out that sellers other items and previous sales? I wonder where they are getting all this stuff. "transformer-fram, United States"?

He drives around the country in a big truck full time buying vintage audio.
He told me he has to make $30,000 per month to cover his expenses.
 
Maybe i am stupid but when i see a driver with that kind of damage i won't pay anything for them even when they are the best drivers.

Holy crap! Well, he's clearly got some good theatre & radio station sources. One of his listings mentions north west Wisconsin or some such place....

Ah, well that certainly explains it. I would suggest everyone reserve judgment on the "expenses". There are way too many variables in that equation.

So if someone gave you an Altec 416 with a torn cone, you'd toss it out even though a recone at GPA isn't all that expensive?

Old, rare and high quality normally equates to a high cash value. Since all this speaker needs is a recone it doesn't seem that far fetched to me. I bet it sounds pretty good once it's fixed up as well.
