I found a great example of a rare SX-1280, very nice condition, with everything intact, and it sounds fantastic! I test ran it with my Marantz M10's last nite and even though it is all original and has the old caps in it, it was still pumping out 185 WPC with ease, with peaks well into the max 360 on the power meters :D it got barely warm after a few hours of heavy music with at least 50 watts all the time. I had been looking, waiting , hoping that I'd find a 1280 after many years of looking. It's pretty much how I stumbled onto my first SX-1980, while I was looking for a 1280, heh! iirc, the 1280 was the successor to the 1250, of which I have. I wonder why they didn't use the same 22,000uF caps in it like they did the 1250 & 1980?

Not sure of the bigger size of the 1980 Caps ?
But the 1250's caps were bigger than the 1280. I mean in size and specs were higher.

Sorry, my bad Echo, they are indeed 15,000uF. I dont know why I said 12, geesh! :D Would it benefit the unit if I upgraded to the 22,000uF ones in there?

I just noticed something about the faceplate of the 1280 versus the 1980, the 1980's lettering is stamped into the aluminum, the 1280 is just silkscreened, or do they call it stencilling? so I was real careful not to hurt the letters while cleaning it :D

My 1980 does not have the lettering stamped "in" the aluminum. Also the cans in my 1980 are 22,000 uF, 100V. ONLY THE WORD "PIONEER" IS STAMPED IN.
 
Sweet! I stumbled across one a while back and couldn't be happier. (it was free) The 1280 has to be the best dam looking receiver I have ever seen. Even at really low volume I get deep rich bass and good highs, and when I bump it up to about 10 o'clock, the warm sound stage pumps with authority. Hell, this thing still has the original caps. (she's put away now pending a recap) Can't wait!

hmm woof, my 1980's lettering is stamped into the aluminum, however, the lettering for the push buttons just below the face glass are not.

Nice! I have gotten a few things for free, but not much. A Marantz 2275, a Pioneer SA-7500 Series II with TX-6500 Series II, a DVL-909 DVD/Laserdisc player, my SX-1250, and KR-9600 :D
 
That receiver is just beautiful...I am jealous because I have been looking for a 1250/1280 or a 1980 for a long time and haven't even sniffed one yet...someday, I hope, my 1050 will have a big brother.
 
Gosh, I just noticed that in my owner's manual it says the 1280 is equipped with a voltage switch for 110/220 variance. On the back of my 1280 I see no such switch. Am I missing something??

I couldn't agree more with your analysis. I have two and will never get rid of them, ever!
