I got Dimensia...

I found a nice pair of RCA Dimensia SPK-400T's at a yard sale yesterday. I very quickly tried them out and all drivers work. The woofers need to be refoamed, but I can't find the proper kit anywhere. These have 12" woofers and all I can find are the kits for the SPK500 which have 10" woofers.

I've already sent a message to Rick Cobb through ebay asking him if he could find a suitable kit. Does anyone know of another source I could try? Thanks!

I found one site that indicated that these were OEM'ed by Onkyo. That's not necessarily a bad thing; Onkyo used to be a huge speaker manufacturer (they still make HT sets) and they made a lot of good stuff.

so i was doing my route for canada post [ driver not carrier ] and an older fella i've spoken with a few times, calls me over.
we talk for a bit. he tells me a story about getting his speakers fixed. he raves about the speakers. i tell him he can do it himself.
he says he has made arrangements with a local shop.

well here we are yr later, i see him outside and he calls me over. says the repair never happened and i can have the speakers right now.
just get them out of hallway. i offer to pay him he says no. i still havnt seen these speakers.
then he tells me they are rca

i agree to take them..... he lets me and says you do the grunt work.

Thanks orsen, but the foam you used fits a cone with an 8 1/4" diameter. Mine are an inch bigger.

The foam inner diameter is 9 1/4" and the outer is 11 3/8".

Okay, upon closer measuring the cone diameter is 9 3/8", so the Onkyo FSK-12F kit from simply speakers is almost a perfect fit.

I’ve found that if I try to find replacement surrounds by make/model of speaker, I pay about 10X over what I would have paid, if I simply use measurements of the frame and cone. If you’re buying OEM surrounds, it’s probably worth it, but if you are buying aftermarket, at least try to find the surrounds through exact measurements of the speaker that you are working on. Just remember to check to see if the cone is tapered or has a flat lip!

If you only do this only occasionally, you might just want to go with the “kit” approach with glue and instructions. But if you do more than a few, it might make sense to at least try ordering by specific measurement (and buying the glue separately). You’re essentially paying a fairly significant up-charge for someone to do this for you when buying a non-OEM kit. I’ve restored a few speakers where the kits cost more than the speakers! You can save you a few bucks here and there, if you’re willing to do the research. The auction site or the “rain-forest-named” mass retailer are usually good sources. As with everything else, the aftermarket surrounds mostly come from China...

Thank you for the info. The foam attaches to the woofer at an angle, so the other 12" Onky kit would be better since it's designed to be angle attached. I'll look on the auction site for a closer fit first.

So I found a set of foams for 12" Onkyo woofers with an angled inner edge. They are very close to the original surround's dimensions. I'll report back once the refoam is complete.

I love my 380! I'm picking up a set of 400 and 500 this evening. The 380 fo came from Midwest and it's the same as the acoustic research AR9 foam If memory serves me correctly. I was told by a tech that works at orban audio (Ohio) that there are other foams that fit but are not the proper thickness as the AR foam apparently is. Anyway I saw the not so long dead post and felt the need to chime in driven by my love for these RCA (ONKYO) speakers. Cheers!
