I Hate the HiFi News Test Record!!!

Distortions

Active Member
Ok, hate is always too strong of a word. "Frustrated" is probably a better phrase. Anyway, I have always been pleased with the way my vinyl set-up sounds. I never heard any surface noise or inner groove distortion. But, for some reason, I decided to purchase a HiFi News Test Record (the most recent version). I played it today on my Thorens TD145 with Stanton 681EEE cartridge. On the seventh band of side one, which is the second anit-skate track, I hear loud buzzing through my right speaker (also right headphone). I spent all day trying to adjust the alignment of the Stanton 681EEE. However, I always hear the loud buzzing on the seventh band. I increased VTF from 1.3 to 1.5 as well as anti-skate, and it does not matter. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Is it necessary that my cartridge pass the second (of four) band of the anti-skate tracks if I don't hear any surface noise or inner groove distortion on my normal records?

Is 1.5 the max vtf for that stylus? Yes it's a real good idea to pass all of the tracks except the last one on side 1.

It is for the EEE styli or the EEE-S or EEE-S II. You can use the other 680/681 and Pickering XV 15 styli in this cartridge. In real life, the main test records I rely on are the CBS Laboratories and the NAB Test LP.
