I don't think they were better at cleaning. The machines are a lot better today and so are the detergents. It's called "technological advances". You just think the old machines were better because Mom did all the work scrubbing the crap out of everything. lol
You don't need to mechanically scrub clothes nearly as much as you used to in order to get them clean. Stains come out better too. The big plus is your clothes last longer because they aren't getting worn out as much by the washer. I can't remember the last time I put clothes on a clothes line and I can't remember the last time I had to do any ironing either (although I do still have an iron & ironing board).
