I hate today's washing machines

I don't know for sure, but I think that a gas-fired chiller for home use is bulkier than a compressor based system. I think absorption systems are more often used where there is a source of waste heat to run them rather than burning fuel for the sole purpose of cooling. For example, waste heat from the Disney World power plant is used to operate chillers producing cold water for air cooling.
 
But that process will not cool a 3000 sq ft house.
They did have gas powered amonia ac that cooled glycol and was circulated in thru a coil in the duct work the gas power cooling unit that used a flame to circulate amonia by convection was outside because of the danger of amonia gas leaking in the house , even even rv fridges had a vented panel on the outside and totally sealed from the inside

Yes there is the absorption system, but that is large and reserved for large buildings.

We have a hospital in this state that still has absorption cooling system in operation, for the original part of the hospital.

But a compressor driven air conditioning system was developed in 1902 by Willis Carrier.

1914 saw the first residential AC, and that was a carrier system.

1922 saw the first centrifugal chiller.

Where you will find ammonia absorption systems in use today, is ice plants.
 
I don’t either. I too have had great reliable service from compressor driven AC and heat.

I feel the same way about solar power for my home. If I were younger, it would make financial sense, but not at this stage in life.
I’ve brought back 30+ yr acs with minimal work and seen 7 yr old 410a systems that were total junk !

Yes, we replace a (close to) 30 yr old R22 system, with a modern 410a heat pump.

The R22 system’s evaporator unit rusted out its drain pan. I did not the condensate under house. Another problem with it was that it was vey inefficient, and this is a ~3000 sq ft home.

410a systems run the compressor at higher pressures than what a compressor with R22 refrigerant. This can lead to early failure in lesser brands.

Also since 410a is a more efficient refrigerant it will heat up and freeze up faster with a dirty coil or blocked filter . Keep the condenser and. Filter clean it’s ok but run with a dirty coil and filter it will cause leaks in the evaporators with in a few seasons ! As far as compressors not so much an issue almost all use scroll compressors and are protected by pressure switches . The reason the evaporators fail other than cheap construction is the expansion and contraction of the hotter than normal gases from a dirty condenser rushing into cooler than normal evap thru a dirty filter causing expansion and contraction of the metal the coil till it causes leaks . Thus explained by Carrier tech support ( I still say crappy construction ) ! Do your maintenance and most likely it will be fine , they don’t hold up like the older R-22 units and will not take the neglect the older ones would .

Yes trane Or American Standard ! Goodman is low quality now although there older stuff from the late 90s was decent ! Good midteir brands Ducane , Concord , Armstrong and Lennox
 
Dehumidifier? I go through 1 every year or 2. I only shop warranty now so I get 4 or 5 years. They are all built cheap and either the compressor or lines leak down.
Our two humidifiers, one runs year round, the other all but winter season, have been very reliable.
 
I had to replace ours a couple years back and went with a basic (read: cheapest) top load GE model for $450. We have kids in sports so we are always doing laundry between uniforms, baseball pants, sheets, towels, etc. We probably do 10 loads a week. If I get 5 trouble free years I'll be happy! I do hate the lid lock, but all else is fine. I don't use the auto fill option and try not to overload it (good luck convincing my wife to do smaller loads). It replaced a 20 year old machine which weighted significantly more, which I equate to better quality. Maybe speed queen next time...
