I have ordered a Pioneer PLX-1000 direct drive turntable.....

We have our first discrepancy on the specifications and I haven't even got the table yet.

This is from the tables' specification sheet: Main Unit Weight: 28.88 lbs.

This is from FedEx: Weight 19.5 lbs / 8.85 kgs

Here we go.......

Your vendor may have under reported the weight in order to get cheaper shipping. Esp if they were offering free shipping.

I do have a great "health" scale here, so I'll weigh it and set that straight, for the record.........so to speak :)

You might not get an accurate weight thus (unless it is a baby scale) -- but here's a trick you can use to weigh it accurately if direct weighing yields variable or odd results. First, weigh yourself holding the tt, and rhen weigh yourself sans tt; the difference between the two weights (assuming the "with" weight isn't too close to the max capacity of the scale) should be a fairly accurate net weight of the tt.

Lol, I think we're thinking way too much about this 'weight problem'.

What I want to know is when will Amazon offer the Pioneer through Prime?

It is probably "dimensional weight"...but I could be wrong.

I shipped a 55lb R2R last month and the commercial account cost via the customers account was at least 1/2 what I was quoted based on weight. So it may be calculated that way for commercial discount reasons.

We will see :scratch2:

But to be accurate you MUST weigh yourself nude in both cases and before you eat breakfast HA!

It has arrived, and in one piece. It is however, colder then a mofo. I have unpacked it and all of the accessories, and my first comment is that this indeed looks to be a very finely engineered product. I did place the platter on the spindle and gave it a short spin. All appears to be well.

For the record, it weighs 29.2 pounds. I weighed myself on my digital health scale (which is very accurate), then placed the platter on the spindle, put the mat on the platter and put the counterweight and headshell in my pocket, and subtracted the results from the first weigh.

I am now going to go down to my local VFW for a beverage of my choicee, with a few of my pals, and let the table warm up.

Later.......

Great news, WaynerN! I had a similar reaction to the one I pawed over at the local DJ equip. store, very nicely done!

This particular store rents out some gear for gigs and I'm waiting until they put a PLX-1000 in rental service. When they do, I'm going to rent one and plug it into my setup here. I don't have a 1200 for comparison purposes but I've got a 1600 MK2 which should be a fair comparison.

Honestly, I'm expecting good things so I may get snookered by "confirmational bias". But, hey, there's a lot of that going around in the basher camp anyway. ;)

So that's 2 negative points already, then:

You have to let it warm up
It requires a good dose of alcohol before use

Make sure your hands can operate before you install the cartridge. I've heard people try to do that after a couple too many and snapped the cantilevers clear off on their expensive MC carts.

I set the table up for my AT440MLa, which I will describe later, but before I started playing that, I loaded my Grado into it, not setting the VTF or even aligning it, but to rather "do the hum test". I thought the motor assembly looked pretty shielded, but alas, hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

So, that is a bummer. This table is not compatible with Grado cartridges.

As I said before, the fit and finish of the deck certainly looks nice. The 105 gram counterweight has a brass bass and seemed to be secure to the tonearm shaft, tho I thought the weight display dial maybe could have been a tad tighter. it nonetheless, didn't seem to be "loose" so I let that pass as an OK.

Mounting the AT440MLa presented no problems, however, any shorter slot length and I would not have been able to put it into Baerwald (Lofgren A) alignment, which would have been a deal breaker. Hint to Pioneer, make slots longer towards the end of the headshell.

I then did the bubble test for azimuth smear (which basically means that the tonearm vertical pivots are parallel to the alignment. While the table wasn't level at this point, the test did prove that the engineering was correct.

cue down (farther then record surface:
