:sigh:i just can't seem to stop looking and buying (what i can afford). since i started with this hobby i have bought a sony ps-x50, a thorens td166, a dual 1219 and a denon 52f. and now i am eyeing a denon dp-47f as a back up to my d52f and a thorens td 160 as an adjunct or replacement for my 166. i can't even make my mind up anymore. a part of me wants to give in to upgraditis and the other part wants to be content with what i already have.
this is proving to be one expensive hobby.
I feel your pain brother!
I used to be a one turntable at a time kind of pig. I bought a Galibier Serac, put a Pete Riggle 12" Woody arm on it, then a ZYX 4D cartridge. Life was good.
Then while visiting a friend, I mentioned I wouldn't mind finding an old Thorens like a TD 124. He pulls a table off his garage shelf, and says which one is this? Well it is indeed a Thorens TD 124. A couple of thousand later, and a couple of years, I got the table done being restored with an Eminent Technology II arm, Clear Audio Signature cartridge, a Baltic birch base veneered in rosewood and a piano gloss finish. You would think it stops there...but it doesn't.
I make arrangements to become the caretaker of a Marc Morin modified AR XA table, just so I know what one is like, and I got tons of respect for Marc's work. But I hate walnut as a wood, so I make arrangements to get a base done in Lace wood. Should bea beautiful table. But....
I open up Bartertown one day,and there is a Loricraft restored Garrard 401 drive unit. I don't need it. I don't. But no, that is not the right answer. I buy it, and it sits here waiting a plinth, arm, and cartridge. I couldn't let such a desirable table with a restoration pass by, especially in such beautiful shape!
So now I got 4 tables, and I really only need one. But none of them will leave here, as they are beautiful examples of analog playback. I would even consider buying an Empire just to round the collection out. My wife must think I am certifiable.
