I'm troubleshooting a B&O Beogram turntable, part of a Beomaster 6500 system. The turntable connects to the receiver and starts on command from the remote as expected. The output of both channels is highly distorted, like blown car radio speaker distorted. I thought the simple fix would be re-capping the RIAA board, which is inside the turntable on this model. Recapping made no change in the sound quality.

I decided to side-step the RIAA board entirely, and connect to the raw cartridge outputs, picking the signals up on an internal board that includes a mechanically operated muting switch. I used a spare receiver (Onkyo) with a proper phono stage for testing. Wiring an RCA cable directly to the cartridge wiring on the muting board, the test album still sounds distorted. I completely disconnected the cartridge wiring from the board, soldered in my test cables, same distortion. I can't see that there is anything but two sections of straight wire from the cartridge to the test cable, ie no electronics.

The same cartridge (MMC2) works perfectly in a 2nd B&O standalone table (TX2) driving the same Onkyo receiver. In my mind these two systems should be identical, cartridge wired to phono preamp with no other electronics. I've performed these tests repeatedly, and used my test cable soldered into the TX2 just to make sure I did not have an issue in the test cable.

So, that sounds like a problem in the wiring from the cartridge socket through the tone arm to the turntable electronics. But an ohmmeter check does not show anything amiss, with the cartridge in place I measure about 770 ohms across two pairs of wires, which is what I measured at the cartridge pins with the cartridge removed. There is no leakage between any of the four wires with the cartridge disconnected, using a Meg range on the meter.

I can't explain how a section of cable could introduce this kind of distortion in both channels. The problem is not intermittent. I realize that the low level audio signal is much different than a DC meter test, but I can't imagine a defect in cabling that would present this issue without showing some clues in the ohm meter test.

Any opinions would be appreciated!

Sounds like a bit of an aggregating project. Not only working on B&O, but with the troubles you are having!
But I like your troubleshooting efforts!

In my mind these two systems should be identical.......
...but clearly 'no' with your different performance
- 6500 TT w/build-in pre = BAD
- 6500 TT hot wired to Onkyo = BAD
- same cartridge, different B&O (no pre) to Onkyo = OK
I can agree cartridge OK. what about cartridge connection in 6500? is P mount secure? good internal contact during playback? maybe you are moving something during playback??
6500 tonearm wiring? Sounds OK since you got the same resistance at the cartridge (removed) that you do with cartridge installed measuring at the wires. Might be interesting to mimic test with other B&O; give you some more data, but you are probably OK.
Hot wire did not work. I might want to do this again until it works. No reason why it should not. I have no familiarity with B&O, but that muting board might be a place to start. Can you bypass this so you do in fact have 'straight wire' If you can hot wire it & work, but then BAD with internal preamp, then I would start looking at resistors & solder joints.

Thanks for your comments, mrwood200. If my testing is sound, the suspect components are the cartridge socket, wiring from the socket to the back of the tone arm (incredibly tiny enameled wire), the junction board at the back of the tonearm, and the cable from the junction board forward.

I did eliminate the muting board, and tied my test cable directly to the cable from the tonearm. I did mimic the same test on the TX2, wiring directly to the cartridge. All of the testing points to a problem with the socket or cabling on the 6500, but I can't explain how that wiring could consistently carry signal, always introduce distortion, and still ohm out properly.

I've dealt with solutions that work for reasons beyond my comprehension before when troubleshooting. If I can't devise another test, or get a brilliant revelation, I'll probably proceed with replacing the tonearm assembly. That in itself is a daunting procedure, but at least there are used parts listed on the auction site from a Euro source.

I just read today that stylus can see 60K+ psi, so there is some room for problems.
I like your list of potential problems, and agree this is odd. Not intermittent, but constant noise even with wire continuity.

...what about send TT#2 through 6500? silly test, but you seem v.proficient at hot wiring. If it work, I think that is closure. Just order parts & move on. If no, then we are interested in something later on in the 6550.
 
This will sound crazy.

Just as a test, crank (not crank, reasonably increase) the tracking force setting on the troublesome table and see if it makes any difference.

Brilliant insight, suggesting a possible mechanical problem instead of an assumed electrical problem. Both turntables were set to 1.0g tracking force as indicated on the sliding scale. On the distorted 6500, increasing the tracking force from 1.0 to 1.5 seems to have completely removed the distortion. So there is some question as to the tracking force calibration between the two tables, but this gets me on to a totally different problem solving path.

This is a perfect example of the kind of help I was hoping for on the forum, a fresh set of eyeballs and comments from a community of experienced audiophiles. Huge thanks to Enophile, and a tip of the hat to the entire Audiokarma community!

I'll share a couple of pictures, the first is the cartridge wiring exiting the tonearm. The second is the splice re-directing the cartridge cable from the muting board and the RIAA board to the external phono stage of the Onkyo receiver.

In this 6500 system, so far I've managed to repair the receiver, remote, and turntable. Next up are the CD player and Cassette!
