I need help on hooking up a Blu-ray to a stereo for sound.

I have this Blu-ray player:

and this is my Shelf & Music System:

The Blu-ray player has one orange Digital out coaxial output and the stereo has only one audio input and is a 3.5mm jack.

My question is there a cable that has 3.5mm jack on one end and digital coaxial on the other end ? and is it going to work well ? I would like to have stereo sound coming through my two speakers.

That 3.5 mm jack is an analog input, so you can't feed it a digital signal even if you could find the cable.

You need a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), along with the appropriate cables to hook up to your system. They range in price from under $30 to infinity. I would get an inexpensive one to try it out. Hope this helps.

Kinda goofy that the receiver doesn't have an HDMI input. I'm stumped. Maybe someone smarter than me will come along.

EDIT: Crossposted with the above. I agree.

Actually, you may not need a DAC (other than the one you already have in the Sony).
If there's a gadget that will take Coax digital and put out USB digital (or bluetooth, maybe), you can stay digital and let the Sony make analog out of it.

I actually have no idea if such a box exists, though....

Or, the Fiio D3 DAC. About the same price.

For this type of DAC and the one mentioned above, you will need to ensure the player's coaxial digital output is set to PCM only and perhaps downmix to 2-ch..

Panlong sells devices on Amazon. I purchased one for less than $30 HDMI in HDMI and RCA out. They call it an audio extractor - works very well with my Chromecast streaming Tidal to my old Yamaha receiver. They make one with 3.5" stereo out that costs even less. The build quality is good and the DAC is capable of better than redbook. That's good enough for streaming Tidal/Chrome/Chromecast/Panlong full lossless to my receiver. I am sure they have device for you for less than $30. I can link to them when I get home from work.

That's another option. But, not sure if I'd bother with HDMI if all I were doing was going for 2-ch audio and had coaxial/toslink connection available.

I am guessing this setup will also involve a TV, the all in one music system seems to list DVD capability as a feature. This would be an upgrade from TV speakers. I would second the DAC or HDMI audio extractor, the DAC would give high quality audio, but I am not sure this system could show much difference.

Simplest and least expensive that I can find:

Same converter, but better metal case:

Least expensive HDMI audio extractor:

The one that I have:

Fellow AKer Chicks turned me onto these devices when he started a thread about streaming audio from his Chromecast into his stereo. My device is really well made. I plugged it in once, and it has been performing flawlessly for 2 months so far.

If you simply want audio from a signal going to the TV; you can run a 3.5mm cable from the headphone jack (on the TV) to your receiver. Adding a DAC or other converter box is just overthinking the problem.

If your TV has RCA audio out, you can use that but you always have to turn the TV on to listen anything that way.

Thanks it's what I'm going to need. But now that I think about it, I need to hook up my cable box to it too. So I'll have to get one with switcher like A or B one for my Blu-ray and the other for my DVR. Do you guys see any problems with this ?

I'm thinking of buying this one.

That "should" work. Just feed a coax cable from the Sony blu-ray into that device, and then buy an RCA>headphone out cable. Connect the RCAs to that device, and then plug in the headphone end into your amp/receiver. I do a similar thing with my same Sony blu-ray, but instead use the HDMI out on the blu-ray player. Either way should work.

I tried that. What I found was that the signal from the headphone out wasn't nearly as good as the sound through the optical/digital out. It's was like the difference between the headphone out on a laptop and a USB DAC. YMMV

I had the same problem and the same Sony BR player, but my system was 5.1. My solution was to run the BR's HDMI into the TV and then run a fiber optic S/PDIF from the TV over to the 5.1 digital input of the 5.1 system. It works great. I have not gone into the Sony's menu to see if the digital output can be converted to 2-channel and then of course, you Sony stereo must have a digital input for this all to work. The synchronization on mine is timed out really good as well (audio/video).

Get this DAC(digital analog converter)...

If you want to go the inexpensive route, Monoprice has what you need;

DAC

Audio Cable

Digital Coax

I use the DAC with my AppleTV in the bedroom and it works fine.

and it will work. I have a few and I am using one to connect the coax out from my Sony CD/Blueray player to the DAC then taking the analog signal from the DAC to my Yamaha amp. Make sure the DAC you get has a coax. input. then connect a pair of RCA type interconnect cables from the DAC to the Stereo amp.
Sounds great. Very detailed.

You should consider buying a basic HTR receiver with HDMI switching. you would be surprised how cheap they are.
