I need help with a QRX-7001 demodulator

OK, I've been poking around with this thing for a couple weeks now. The demodulator has never worked since I've owned it. It would show a CD-4 beacon properly, but there was no separation front to back and it had a noticeable whistle when a carrier was detected. I pulled out both boards and recapped them. No improvement. I replaced all the transistors except the FETs. No improvement. I've replaced IC1 and IC2 and found a bad capacitor on the power board. Now, I've got front-to-back separation on the right channels, but the left channels are still summed together. The Left CD-4 adjustment will bring the levels up on both, but they're tied to each other so the magical demodulation isn't working on this. What am I missing here? And yes, the turntable and cartridge are CD-4 capable and work fine on other systems.
