I bought a pair of Magnaplanar SMG's or "maggies" as they are knicknamed.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me more about them?

There is not alot of info out there like what power rating they are ( i don't wanna overdrive them).

Thanks, Gordon

Magneplanars are one of the most popular audiophile oriented speaker brands ever made. In a poll more Stereophile readers owned Maggies than any other speaker.
If you have questions about them that don't get answered here go direct to the company's web site.

As far as power ratings go: unless you have an amplifier with a lot more than 100WPC you will not overdrive them. All Magnepan products need lots of power to sound right. The fuse on the back panel is for the tweeter sections only. Some receivers/amplifiers do not like working with the 4ohm load Maggies present. If they have no 4ohm rating they may not work properly or at all with Maggies.

If you are used to the sound of box type speakers you will be hearing something different. The open boxless sound of Maggies and other panel speakers very quickly makes one either a lover or hater of the sound.

If you like or are used to lots of bass your Maggies and most other Maggies (MG-3.6R's and MG-20 excepted) will almost certainly need a sub woofer to get full range sound. For the SMG's or any Maggie a crossover point well below 100hz (50hz to 75hz best) is recommended.

Once you like flat (panels) you'll never go back.:smoke:
