I need to replace my Advent/3 woofers

impaled

New Member
I am $25 deep into the pair of monitors, and the cabinets are flawless and the tweeters are great, but the woofers are burned. The woofers have rub and when are reading OL on my meter, when i disconnected them.

they appear to be about 6"

what would you recommend for woofers?

they say w-1610 6.4ohm c847 on them.

I would *ideally* like to keep it under $100 all said and done.

I'd use ORIGINAL Advent woofers.
Check ebay, check often, set up an alert for when any are listed. You might not find any today or tomorrow. Keep looking. Sometimes it takes a while.
As far as using "something else" you'll get speakers that make sound but they won't make the "Advent" sound. Frankenspeakers is term commonly used for speakers with non original parts.

Search for Advent 3 woofers and then use the code off the back of your woofers to determine they are what you need. Visual will help as well, see if they look like your woofers. Use zoom feature to check for damage and surround condition.

Your woofers may have been used in other Advent models, if so that could make your search possibly easier.
They should look like these...

Is $140 to get the pair reconed professionally worth it? If so the place I called was Speaker Exchange in Tampa.

You could probably get used woofers cheaper but if you have yours repaired it might be quicker, plus there might be a warranty, don't know.
We're not supposed to talk about value here.
You might try starting a thread in Dollars and Sense, ask how much Advent 3 are worth in very good condition cosmetically and fully operational.
You know where you'll be $ wise total if you get yours reconed. See how their value vs. your cost weighs out.

First off apologirs, I did read the rules, but I did not remember the value part. I will review them again. Sorry about that again.

I will look for used drivers but I would probably rather know that I dropped the cash on something fully functional and not a speaker that could have the same fate.

As far as value (not speaking in dollars) I don't know if I would be happier with other speakers for the overall cost. I am relatively new to the vintage HIFI thing just to be honest. There are a lot of other speakers that I could get my hands on for the same value. I saw the deal on CL and googled and jumped. So I don't even really KNOW what they should sound like at the end of the day.

I have researched enough to know that the tweeters and cabinets are worth more than I have invested, EVEN without woofers.

I am not really sure what to do at this point.

I will research and return!

Cheers!

They are 100% identical.

I should also mention that I went through the crossovers and they are good. Caps, etc.

For $140 you may be able to get new speakers that would be as good. Peace and goodwill.

My thoughts exactly. I have a lot of speakers that for less money sound great. A

The only appealing thing of these is the physical size and mostly rave reviews on performance for the physical size.

That's why I suggested starting a post in Dollars and Sense asking the value of fully functional and cosmetically nice Advent 3's...you may end up with more into yours than they are worth.

I did make a post over there but I will take any good info info I cab. Thanks.

Since we can't talk about value here I can't tell you that you may be putting way too much $$ into your Advents if you get them reconed and would want to pass them along in the future.;)
