I splurged and bought myself a soldering station

Redboy

a few good watts
To date, all of my soldering has been done with a Radio Shack el cheapo crapstick iron.

Today, my Hakko 936 soldering station came in the mail...

Woo hoo, I'm runnin' with the big boys now! Can't wait to fire it up.

Awesome, Nate! I absolutely love mine. Night and day difference. Like yourself, I was using the same ol' RS horseleg. Where did you get yours? I got mine local at Ness Electronics through an epay listing.

When you can, share your impressions of the unit. :thmbsp:

Hakko's are bad-assed. Once Wellar left Conneticut to North Carolina (or wherever the hell they ended up), their irons began to suck. It seemed like they moved to a pure profit business model. Even the old WTCP's needed heaters and thermo-switches from time to time.

I reluctantly tried a Japanese (gasp) brand, Hakko. I got a 926. I've had this sucker for 20-some years. It's never given me any problems. It's beat to $hit now, but it's still works as well as day 1.

I'll never go back to Wellar. The Hakko is just better. We use Metcal's at work. They cost a lot, but I still prefer my Hakko.

Congratulations on a great iron.

Great. Say, what tips do you like on this thing? It came with two, a needle-sharp thing that I probably shouldn't be trusted with, and a small chisel deal that looks slightly larger than what I'm used to using.

And where should I start with the temp?

And make sure they aren't polyester! I learned that about 30 years ago, back when poylester pants were in fashion. Hot solder goes through polyester at about Mach 2. :tears:
Confession time:

I've already melted some nylon pants with a soldering iron. And yes, I was wearing them at the time. And no, I won't tell the rest of the story.

Darren, I got mine from Parts Connexion. They've got a good sale running right now, and it was an impulse purchase that I added to an order of parts.

I'll be sure to share, but I expect only good things compared to what I've been working with!

Nice look'n piece Nate. I just replaced the old Weller myself a couple months ago. Had a WTCPT for almost 26 years of constant use. Only had to replace the tip a couple times. Till I knocked it off the test bench ,the old plastic wasn't up to the impact..LOL . Bought another WTCPT 60 watter.
Stations are the way to go...:thmbsp:

First project update:

It's good! I knocked together a little "DACT in a box" pre tonight, and wow is this iron nice!

Shoulda done this a long time ago.
