See I knew I had to have missed something obvious, and it was Qts! Peerless suggests that a small ported box is okay, while Madisound suggests that 4.5 ft^2 or even larger is okay, but being a fan of well-controlled bass I'm now concerned. Do you think this would sound like a mess? BTW, I ended up with a ~6 ft^3 ported as the best-looking compromise, not that it changes this issue much. I wonder if going a bit smaller and stuffing the crap out of it would help keep things under control?

Most likely, I'll end up wishing for a 3-way I can't design, like every time I look at a DIY speaker. :sigh:
 
Look back a few messages. Try the Peerless in 45 liters w/ 2x7 port or so.
You'll get 102 db w/ 20 watts.

Back to the 830869 8", It seems like with the appropriate equipment and knowledge, this (attached) could be made to work beautifully. Unfortunately that rules out me as the designer. I know Zilch doesn't wanna do it :no:.

I just had to go and look at that drawing again... I don't know if I can resist trying this. Particularly since, even if it is a spectacular failure, I would only have to chop off the top of the box, adjust the port, and make a more standard e-wave crossover to have a pretty nice normal pair of econowave. Two nice woofers and some crossover bits to spare wouldn't be the end of the world.

One other suggestion... why not make the box, with a removable front baffle (screwed in)? If you did that, you could try several different configurations:

1) MTM, as pictured

2) THX/Holman style, with the horn on top and the two woofers directly below it (HWW, in other words), woofers wired in parallel

3) 2.5 way- same driver arrangement as the THX/Holman, just with the bottom woofer wired as a "helper driver" (i.e, handling bass only, below the "baffle-step frequency of the box, which is where the width of the baffle is an acoustic half-wavelength)

4) Single woofer, as normal E-wave.

Could still be made to look good, if you used some nice-looking hardware to hold in the baffle...

Good point Gordon, I would definitely do that. Would you do anything special with the crossover for the MTM, in particular? Vs. the 4-ohm e-wave design available, that is? Or, do you think I'd have to just try it and measure to see what happens? I originally thought that MTM crossover design involved some sort of special technique, but the more I poke around the more it seems that it's just about getting a low enough crossover freq., at least initially..

By the way, I'm aware of the potential for baffle step problems in that drawing - just wanted to check out how the drivers measure out in MTM arrangement and how high off the floor I would want them.

So, I finally got around to getting the loudspeaker design cookbook (came today) and I've been reading bits and pieces... I can't believe I waited so long (heard about it... hmm... 8 years ago?). It has already answered four questions I was going to ask about this idea here. I think what I'll do is keep reading this, put together a detailed plan (which I still think will be based on the most recent idea here with the dual 8" peerless), and start a new thread.
