Identifying vintage JBLs (with pics)

Can someone help this kid identify the vintage JBLs he found in his grandfather's basement. He's from my headfi forum. I'll link to the thread and you can post your reply here. I'm trying to stop him from tearing them apart before he knows what they are. Thanks.

The cabs appear to be C38, which can be verified by the external dimensions. I'm not seeing a JBL logo, so perhaps custom; they look too well-made to be homebrew.
