Identifying Your Advent Loudspeakers

Do you know what the power handling limit is on the Original Baby Advent?

The are pretty loud now, and my Pioneer SX-780's power meters are at about one watt right now (pretty loud in my room). how much power can these things handle?
 
Large Advent grille cloth replacement.

Someone recommended this as a source for replacement grille cloth for Large Advents:

Recommended colors were "Natural Light", "Natural Brown", or "Lambswool": Not exactly identical to the original, but pretty close!

I admit that I unashamedly stole this information from another AK thread, but figured there was a better chance of locating the info when needed if it was posted to this reference "sticky".

As far as power handling, Mr Kloss was never really clear on any of his speakers what they were capable of handling. The most important thing that was stressed was that distortion was to be avoided. Clipping kills tweeters, and eventually everything else.

The advents were around 90-91 DB efficient. By the time you're putting any real power through them you're pushing 120db --which is stupid loud and unpleasant to listen to for any length of time.

If you babys are plenty loud and aren't distorting, they should be ok.
 
Great job...amazing photo history. I've had 2 pairs original Large "Double Advents" since 1976, but just picked up a pair of mint 4002's for $100/pair. They have the Jensen label on the back. Obviously, Jensen sold the Advent designed speakers before they designed their own versions.
 
Update:

The 2002 advents finally have a picture thanks to Markn2wae.

Some picture updates have been added in the jensen line to show some nudes of the laureates, prodigy towers, and prodigy II bookshelfs.
Since the software will only allow 15 pictures inside the post, you may see a link to the picture labled "Click for a nude picture"
No naked women, just speakers, sorry :D

If anyone has pictures of the 3002 I would appreciate it.

Yesterday I lucked upon them, thinking they might have backup woofers for my DQ-12's in there... but after listening hmmm...I think I can find a room for them to play in... :thmbsp:

Just a quick thank-you for this thread. I picked up a pair of original Baby Advents at a thrift (though I didn't know what they were at the time) and wanted to make sure I was getting the right refoam kit and this post was a big help. When it's all said and done I should have some decent kitchen speakers for under $30. Not free, but not bad either. Thanks!

I've been surfing the sites for this information on Advents for some time.
And, just by chance, I found a reference to this site that stated you might have a post regarding pictures and a history of the Advents. As a result, I was able to purchase a pair of the large utility model today that had been recently reconed and sound great! Being an "old dude", these were the speakers I originally wanted when I was back in the military in '72. But, due to travel, size, etc, I didn't get them and opted for the original Bose 301's instead. I can't believe the sound of these speakers!! Your labor is greatly appreciated!! :thmbsp:

Large Advent (utility) (69-77) specs.

All of the specs aren't really known, as they were not clearly published in brochures. I remember power recommendations to be something like "20 watts per channel for 1000 cubic feet of room" or something like that. I would say that no more of 50 watts continuous would be wise, however I've had them fairly loud on 120wpc amps and they don't seem to sweat it. Just as long as you don't clip them the tweeters will hold out.

I've heard the large advents well down into the high 30s as far as frequency response goes.

YOu may be able to find specs in a stereo review mag (or some similar publication) from the 70s. THey performed lots of reviews on speakers that didn't have published specs.

Does anyone know what the original list prices were for a pair of Advent 4002's and Advent/1's? I'm just curious because I have a pair of each that I bought recently. Does anyone who bought them new still have them?
 
Just for yucks, since I sold these; Advent didn't have "Model Numbers!"

The first speaker is, "The Advent Loudspeaker"

The second speaker is, "The Advent Loudspeaker Utility Finish"

And the third is, "The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker"

All were said to have the same response and sound. The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker had a lower impedance and REQUIRED more power.

I still have the Advent spec sheets in my workroom.

P.S. When I toured the Advent factory, and met Hank, I saw that all tweeters started life in the toe of pantyhose legs. That was the first form for the pulp mixture. The pulp was mixed in a Waring Blender from scraps of paper weighed
to make for the exact mixture Advent wanted for their tweeters.

Advent 201 (two page brochure)
2 Advent Newsletters featuring Audrey Bund (good stories there!)
Advent 100/101 brochure
A 6 page brochure on the Advent loudspeakers (I was wrong about the Smaller needing more power)
Several reprints of test reports for Advent loudspeakers
Advent 100A spec sheet (6 pages)
And a copy of Hofman’s Iron Law By H. Kloss

That said, I am not sure of heiatus’s attitude. Is there someone else with a scanner? I am contacting Jpdylon for an address?
