Being purely a jazz lover, I don't have much exposure to other rock/jazz bands like Steely Dan which is my absolute favorite in this genre. Can anyone recommend other artists/bands that you think I would also dig in the same groove as Steely Dan? I prefer bands in the 60s up to 80s.

Another question, are the albums of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker outside of Steely Dan worth listening?

Oh my, I think I like Fagen's "The Nightfly" at least as much as Steely Dan's "Aja", and better than a lot of their others. Not a bad song on it, in my opinion, and the engineering is to just as high a standard as SD's. Definitely worth a listen.

Steely Dan is kind of in a genre by itself. There just isnt anything directly comparable. That said, you might check out Danny Wilson's "Meet Danny Wilson" and maybe Toy Matinee's self titled CD.

Fagen's "The Nightfly" and "Kamakiriad" are both good. I have only heard part of one of Becker's solo efforts, but I liked what I heard. Also, there is a Becker song "book of liars" on a live CD I have. I give it an A+.

Good question and some good answers! Check out Larry Carlton, who handled a lot of their guitar work. "Deep Into It" and "Sapphire Blue" are two that I have.
 
Many of Rickie Lee Jones albums have Jazz elements with self-penned compositions. But every once in awhile she'll do a cover and make it her own; like "My Funny Valentine" and "Walk Away Renee" (Left Banke & Four Tops) from 'Girl At Her Volcano'. "Rebel, Rebel" (Bowie) from 'Traffic From Paradise' and "Show Biz Kids" (Steely Dan) and "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" (Traffic) from 'It's Like This' and the last album mentioned features Walter Becker! Also be sure to check out albums from Traffic (Steve Winwood - Dave Mason - Jim Capaldi - Chris Wood), one of my favorites being 'John Barleycorn Must Die'. And you might enjoy the first two Blood Sweat & Tears albums.

i love the obscurity and accuracy of photobitstream's recommendation on sopwith camel.....although i could give a damn about SD
 
Each of their LPs was different. I will suggest one in genre of the Aja LP...

Try Bob James' "Touchdown" LP...I'm pretty sure that one will float your boat.

Some early Genesis tracks with Peter Gabriel are pretty good, not exactly jazz but different than typical rock. Mahavishnu Orchestra, any of the albums, is also a good choice: Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin, Jerry Goodman, Jan Hammer and crew.

Second the Toy Matinee recommendation. Kevin Gilbert was the main musical genius behind Toy Matinee and before he perished in the mid 90's, he recorded the songs found on his most outstanding concept album "The Shaming of the True". Highly recommended.
 
One of my favorites in the Rock/Jazz category is Blood Sweat and Tears. I never get bored listening to them. I use BS&T also after I make any minor/major changes or tweaks to my systems. Just makes a great reference source for me.
