Ikea Expedit Pull Out Drawer for Cover Flipping / Browsing?

Has anyone tried to make something like this?

The shelf compartment cube dimensions look as though a sleeve protected LP could be stored cover facing out.

But the walls of the half drawer for the Expedit or the newer Kallax are too thick, making the width too narrow for an LP.

The other option is the plastic box made for the cabinets which might work width-wise but there's a lip around the top which prevents it from happening. Just wondering. It would be cool if this was an option.

You have less than an inch, total sideroom clearance, with which to make two sides of your drawer, and about 3/4" top clearance, with which to make your drawer bottom. I suppose it could be done, if you had a decent table saw, and some skills.

The real problem I see is that there are about 80 single LPs in one cubicle of an Expedit, about 30 lbs worth of records. Without drawer glides, that's a sizable load to balance while partially extended from the cube. I wouldn't want to chance dropping a cube worth of records, for the safety of the records, and for my feet.

I just read the spine text. In order to make that easier, I put a stopblock in the back of each cube, so the records stay flush with the front face of the Expedit. Just a stick of square molding, stuck down with 3M foam mounting tape. I used a record jacket as a locating jig. The whole job took just a few minutes.

the stop is something I need to add in. I also need to make some alphabetical dividers. I've seen them made from crappy albums, just take the record and glue it into the jacket sticking halfway out. Stick the letter needed onto the record, and away she goes.

So you want to pull a crate out of a cubical onto the floor every time you want to look for a record? Sounds like to much lifting of heavy boxes to me.
