I'm a BAAAAD Searcher...

Trying to compare:
Pioneer M-790
Kenwood KR-6600
Kenwood KR-5060
Sony TA-AV601

All I can find are Sites to buy manuals or where to shop. All I really want to know is Watts to the Speakers, and maybe an overview or review.I gotta be missing something.(besides braincells) Any info or re-directs appreciated...
Have the Sony in line and the 6600 arrives in a few days. Opportunity to acquire the 790 and the 5060. Don't even know what the Sonys putting out but it's driving a bunch of Towers w/15s plus,plus...LOUD.........Thanks...JB

Thanks Scuzz...Didn't help..actually led me back to an earlier post of mine on AK...'Made for JCPenneys' Funny...Hoping a people out there owned 1 of these or something......JB

Second hit on Sany TA-AV601 said this:

"We were able to test the outputs one of the times it didn't go into protect mode. Amplifiers produced 38 volts per channel @ 8 ohms for 180 watts and 31 volts per channel @ 4 ohms for 240 watts via discrete outputs. We ran it for days at a time when it wouldn't go into protect mode."

Hard to find any information on the M-790 that is not talking about defective units or it's poor design or the fact that the protection circuit tends to kill the outputs. Usually things that would make me shy away from buying a used one.

NO Fricking Doubt!!! This is why I'm here...Thanks...So what you found out concerning the Sony...180 @8 OHMS,240 @ 4 OHMS...Right?
How 'bout the 6600 I already committed to? I mean as long as you're being so helpful and all... :)

the kenwood kr-6600 is rated 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms. it is a very nice vintage receiver. i have one myself.

Thanks Mr.98...downloading as we speak, hopefully will help me get the most out of this 601...don't even know its ratings? It may not be 'high-end' like you guys got but it's the best "I" ever had... drives the hell out of 4 Towers w/15's (Marantz,Jensen),Velodyne 8" powered sub,2 Sony 5" w/tweets,2 Aiwa Highs.NO Distortion past 11:00 on my favorite dial...1/2 empty can of Beer walked of the desk...180 or 240 Watts per ch. ? Is that what I have Scuzz ? cool
Hey I might as well ask (and show my naivete) how do I determine if I'm running 4ohms or 8 ohms...dumb huh...Thanks ....JB

Hey 98...Took 3 hrs.to download from that link(slooow dial-up)then wouldn't open,said corrupted ...any chance you could e-mail me the pdf? joebeach@live.com
Would be pleasantly surprised if my 601 puts out watts like Scuzzer indicated. Also can somebody direct me to a primer on 'OHMS'...as per last post...

Downloaded the 601 manual and it states 150 watts per channel for th 601. The ohm load is just the speaker impedance. Most of the time it's marked on the back of the speaker.

Wow ...ScuZZ...cool, Any chance you could e-mail the Manual? 150 wpc, great!! Curious about 'Digital Delay Dolby'... 601 dedicates separate Spkr. Outs,A-B,L-R, with controls for amount of Delay and Intensity on front. Unused at present because I don't know if that means I can hook-up 6 Spkrs. or have to sacrifice from other channels... Have an idea to hook-up 2 Vintage 3-way Scotts w/15's for D.D.D. channel. About OHMs... currently running 2 Marantz Towers SP4115's (8 ohm),2 Jensen Towers CS315's (ohms not listed, just says 220 watts Peak) assume they're 8ohm...plus 9 other Spkrs. jumpered off same channels,2 kick-ass Sony MB105's,100w. 8ohm,1 powered Velodyne 8" sub, 1 3-way Front Spkr. from an old Audiologic surround system, 1 4" from same system (spkr.faces rear of box, ported out the front, don't know what that is called), 2 Aiwa 3" boxes, then out on porch 2 old Sony 4" in wood boxes,All are 8ohm (didn't check Awais, too hard to get to)...Anyway,would that mean 13 Spkrs. x 8 OHMs = What the Hell do I Know??? Plus now I'm gonna add 2 more big boys as Surrounds...Am I breaking the OHM Law or something? Sounds Amazingly Great at the 11:00 Spot...No Distortion...Great Ambience wherever I move around... Sony gets Hot so I installed Fan...Runs about 10-12 hrs. Daily.
ANY/ALL Advice needed by this (Knee-Oh-Fight)* Thanks...JB

Since I'm not sure how you're hooking them up I don't know what the impedance is but if you are simply hooking all of them to the + and - terminal on the amp and running them at the same time you're in serious trouble.

Seven 8 ohm speakers hooked to one channel would be a 1.1 ohm load. Much too low for the Sony to deal with. You'll kill any normal amp doing this.

Wow... I jumper at back of 1 spkr. to next spkr.and so on,long runs of wire.Amp is only doubled-up on back on ch.A, L and R . Do the long runs of wire reduce impedence? Does the Gauge of wire affect anything? What,if any, are warning signs I'm stressing Rec/Amp. What about manual? Where or/and How do I check impedence/Ohm Load? Too many ????'s I know. But I am here to learn...Thanks...JB

What,if any, are warning signs I'm stressing Rec/Amp.

Amp runs really hot and perhaps the protection relays kick in when you turn it up. If you get to the smell of smoke stage it's probably too late...

Normal amps are designed for 4 ohm load minimums which means no more than two 8ohm speakers or one 4 ohm speaker per channel. If you want to run a boatload of speakers off of one amp then you'll need to have them wired in parallel and series instead of just all in parallel. Most of the time this sounds like crap but at least it won't destroy your amp like you're doing now.

Poof!

Hmmm...But it Sounds So Good
Maybe that's why 30 some year-old Marantz smoked after hard daily use,hehe...
Really need to get smarter...
Really need to get...(see below)
