Good day folks, I hope everyone is doing very well and enjoying their Sunday afternoon!

I am a newbie when it comes to all of the abbreviations used all the time.

I have a question and an open request.

What do people mean when they use the word "caps"? An example being "Replace all the caps and your Marantz 2230 will operate much better"
Does "caps" mean capacitors?

As for my open request, could a thread or menu option please be started/made giving the definitions of all the abbreviations?
There are so many people interested in audio/HiFi/electronic equipment/devices that the threads are all about, also wanting to know if they can and how they can fix something on their own but may be to shy to ask what the abbreviated or slang words and terms mean.
Think of all the vintage receivers for example that people dearly love but one day the volume adjustor starts making awful noises when touched, they jump on this site but have no idea what folks mean when they explain how to fix it so....in the trash it goes. It's like someone buying an old Farm and in the barn are 4 '32 Model A Fords with less than a thousand kilometers/miles on the gauge but they knock the barn down on top of them...simply because they looked them up but couldn't understand what they were reading like it's a language they wish they knew but don't.

Just an idea.

Hello and welcome from Aotearoa New Zealand. There aren't that my common abbreviations in use are there ? I can think if a few common ones - DMM (digital multi meter), DAC (digital / analogue converter), CDP (CD player), MM (moving magnet, phono cartridge type), MC (moving coil, also a phono type), R2R (reel to reel), TT (turntable), WAF (the ability to stash piles of great audio gear without a pending divorce - also known as the Wife Acceptance Factor), SCROE !! (a great audio find, often saved for rare / valuable items received for free or for very little outlay), score ! (like a SCROE!! but lower level with less bragging rights), :banana:(see SCROE!! and score !), :eek2: (OMG are you serious ?)

I agree with you that it would make things clearer if members did not use so many abbreviations. What confuses me the most is when well established abbreviations are used with a new meaning. Examples:

SQ = Stereo/Quadaraphonic a matix encode / decode system used for quadraphonic recordings. I see people use it as shorthand for sound quality.

IC = Integrated Circuit. I see people use it as shorthand for interconnect.
 
Welcome!!! Yes, we can use some confusing or sometimes hard to decipher abbreviations or terms--especially if American English is not your primary language. Stick around and read, and it will slowly but surely become clearer--and don't forget that the only "dumb" question is the one not asked.

And as I have posted before--kudos to all of the international members that "cater" to us Americans that arrogantly never bothered to learn a second or third language, and just expected the rest of the world to learn ours!!!
 
Welcome. Yeah, I think there are way too many acronyms used around here. I've thought of making a thread to petition folks to ease off on them. I mean, it's not really any harder to type out an actual word. Maybe it makes people feel special and "in the know," to use them all the time. It makes sense if you are just talking with your friends, and you all know that the others know what you are talking about, but there are a lot of folks here who are fairly new to all this, and it can be frustrating. There is a thread somewhere with a list of all the common abbreviations, but that doesn't really help too much...
