I'm a woodworker - not an audiophile

Hi, I'm Scott, a 71 year old woodworker from Ohio.
It's my grandson that is the audio guy.
He has a Kenwood KR 6030 that he has refurbished electronically.
And he has asked his dear old grampa to make a wood case for his receiver.
It's a box! How hard could that be for a woodworker?
Well, I've come up with a few ideas, but would like it to be as close to original specs as possible.
So, if you don't mind, I would like to hang out here a while to see if any of you have some input, suggestions, etc.
From what I've been able to find on the Internet so far, it looks like there were originally two options.
Just wood sides [B-12], or a model with a top as well as sides [CB-12K].
Sam has indicated a preference for the one with the top.
The original has 20-25 thin slots across the top for ventilation.

So, I'm here to pick your brains about this project.

Welcome to AK. I'm less than an accomplished woodworker but I got asked recently to make a case for an older unit. Getting the size just right and all square was a task, but you may not have much issue with that. The unit did have about a dozen tubes as I recall, so ventilation was key. The back was open so that helped some.

What worked well for top ventilation was some nice looking decorative sheet metal from a Lowe's. I thought it worked out pretty well. Do a search for Item #779933. They have that in two colors. A bit pricey but looks appropriate for the older stuff.

As per your question about a
rebuild to the specs, I'd stay pretty much
to the orig...an additional slot or two
wouldn't hurt.

I'd also get to to share that nothing
should be placed on top of the
receiver to allow sufficient space
for cooling.

Might there also be room in your
World of Wood to include your OWN
electronic gear?:bigok:

Getting a guy that will make a nice wooden case is the hardest part for all my builds, both hi-fi and guitar. Scott could likely fund his retirement just by hanging out around here.

If you're like me, you want the gear to look good and sound good. Welcome aboard Scott, leaver your card on the table. :)

EV3 - Thank you very much for your reply. You do nice work! Nice clean joints, diggin the rounded corners.
The decorative metal from Lowes is a good idea.

I met with Grandson over the weekend to run a few options up the flagpole for him.
We're going with Walnut sides, and Walnut veneer over some thin plywood for the top.
The veneered plywood will be captured with a slot cut into each side with a router.
I showed him a vent I printed with the 3D printer at work. Two of them side by side will provide as much ventilation as the holes in the manufacturers original metal cabinet.

I'm very impressed with the warm welcome you all have given me.
I'll be sure to share the results with you all.

Hi Bob, You know, I have never sold any of my work. I whittle too, and lots of people love the animals and say I should sell them.
But, they take a long time to make - they would be too expensive.

Now cabinets? It's an interesting idea.
