i'm about to buy these custom made speakers-can you ID?

Those look pretty decent, and like everyone else has said, Focal isn't cheap. You get to hear them for $250, though; if they work, buy 'em for sure. :-)
 
not to rain on anyones parade but i emailed her also and she does have a couple of receivers for sale that i would be interested in, so, she DOES have power and music to play those speakers with...unless of course she doesnt know it :)

That's a little fishy that she wouldn't hook up a receiver for the original poster to audition the speakers.... :scratch2:
 
Tweeters and mids are Focal. Woofers look to be McCauleys.

Could be some d*** serious dynamics there.

As for the cabinet- those Focal mids would be in a sub-enclosure (small) and are usually used down to 250 Hz or so. By that point, the cabinet shouldn't be a problem (internal height) for the woofers...

those look like VMPS super towers...
very nice speakers with focal drivers I believe
msrp was around $2000
 
they are focal drivers & the missing dispersion bar wont make a big difference,the cabinets look like they are made very well,you cant go wrong for that price.

i much prefer focal speakers over any b&w speaker,way too much hype & marketing connected with b&w & not enough focus on sound.
 
I GOT THE SPEAKERS!!!!!
when i walked into her garage, i said to myself: DAAAAAAMN!!!!!
tweets and mids are focals alright. and woofers are McCauleys like one of you have mentioned. i've never seen or heard something like this before. there's another tweeter in the back of the speakers, and speakers are to be connected with a pair of weird looking wire that locks when twisted, and then to a some sort of passive cross-over box, and then to the amp. sound is simply amazing. too much bass for me though. each speaker weighs about 150 pounds!!! i sprained my back moving these to and from my car. plus for $250, i got a boxfull of premium speaker wires and interconnects. i think those alone are worth more than $250. thanks to all of you who encouraged me to get them.

As good as the focals are, the McCauley's are probably the best drivers in those boxes. Glad you decided to get them.

Thats exactly the problem I saw with the box design. Boomy?
However, you got some damn good drivers there, and take a look in the outboard crossover, you might be surprised. Nice score. :thmbsp:
 
How would the box design be a problem with bass freq? Just curious what you saw?

based on a quick look, baffle step diffraction might be steep as the high freq drivers are centered rather than the preferred offset driver scheme, but there are no crossover schematics to see how they dealt with that. If you are concerned with standing waves, there are more ideal shapes/dimensions, but any problems in a box that small would happen at freq greater than bass freq and even if they occured within the bass range, without seeing the inside of the cabinet, it would be purely a guess.

Its the shape of the box. From the pictures it looks like its square and the height looks like a multiple of the side, a big no-no (standing waves). You should always try to use the "golden ratio' where possible. I figured that the respose would be lumpy/pronounced in one area, ie: boomy bass.
