Glad to hear you are back in action. I've paid a lot of attention to your past posts and highly value your views and opinions when it comes to turntables and cartridges. You also have a very impressive collection of music and tubes. Now get the rest of those 12 inchers into your new home and show us your beautiful setup!!! :rockon:
 
This evening's lps

This is a reissue of a mono recording that I've only listened to once before. The sound is good, but there's some hardness to Roy's voice that isn't present playing some of the same songs on my new Mo-Fi gold disc CD. In fact, the CD is more emotionally involving, for whatever reason. I suspect one of my better cartridges, like the Glider, would straighten all that out:

A couple nights ago I showed you a picture of a Bonnie Prince Billy record that I don't care for, and this one is here to balance it out. :D A fairly new album, this one has my attention from the beginning with it's lighthearted melodies and creative lyrics. As for the cover, not sure what to tell you there...

This is the only direct-to-disc record I own. Despite the title, there are other instruments at play, like the piano. Aural candy, the sound is nuts. Good nuts. Like Brazil nuts:

Take a look at this!

I just uploaded this one real quick because it's so neat. Anyone ever seen/heard it before? I payed a pretty penny for it at PRE and the cover and record are not exactly in pristine condition, and there's a tiny drill hole through it, but you have to look hard to notice it.

The music is typical Sun Ra: a mind-bending mix of percussive instruments, synthesizers, horns, and other strange things. It's really good actually. The recording is more on the side of lo-fi, yet there's still a sense of depth, and you can really tell it was recorded live. About 2/3's of the way through side one all instruments stop except the drums, and a deep, tribal beat of complex rhythms carries you through the rest of it.

Speaking of that, inside the gatefold sleeve it says, among other things: recorded in performance at the Sun Arts Club, Chicago, 1960.

This time it seems Sun Ra was with his "Astro Infinity Arkestra." :D Reading the lengthy list of participating musicians, we see that Mr. Ra played both a "Solar Sound Organ," as well as a "Solar Sound Instrument." Yes. There's also a little blurb about how those who continue to look to the past are doomed, and that in this "new space age" that is a particularly dangerous practice:

It is no accident that those who die are said to have passed since those who have PASSED are PAST.

I mentioned this in my recent thread about the Grado Silver. Ei is no longer in business, and their last round of tubes had a lot of quality control issues. I've had these for a long time, so I plugged them in last night just to see what happens. Sounded ok at first. Then tonight, as I began the evening's session, something didn't seem right. The sound was a little muddy, confused during complex musical passages, and un-involving.

So I tried these Mazda (France) chrome plate 12AX7s:

Better, but now there was some hum.

Finally a pair of vintage genuine Telefunken 12AX7s were put into service. Much, much better! Everything came back to life. Sorry, didn't take pictures of those, I was too caught up in the music.

Now we're talking. Another great Mingus album, but some how my copy has gotten rather dirty. I'll have to do something about that ASAP.

Here's a record that was guaranteed to not be dirty on arrival, as it was still sealed when I purchased it. One of the less bizarre Sun Ra records I've ever heard, featuring lush instrumentation (primarily of the brass kind), and dynamic, exciting sound:

This beautiful lp - which is a repress from a couple of years ago that's probably worth at least a little bit of money now - sounds so good it's legendary. I hesitated to even take it out and play it, for fear of damaging it, getting it dirty, or worse. Should I even other until I have a cartridge installed? Well, the desire to hear this lp again won in the end. Mostly slower, contemplative jazz, with a group comprising bass, drums and piano, this is one of my most highly-prized records :

Here's a 45rpm reissue I received for Christmas a couple years ago, then only listened to once or twice. Featuring only drums, guitar, and the organ, this is a relatively low-key, but tight-sounding album. Sound is excellent, as is expected from the 45rpm reissues:
