im looking at a little tube amp for fun. what would i expect from it?

i was surfing cl and came across a neat little tube amp. i dont even need it. i thought it might be fun but i have jbl l890 towers and thinking it might struggle.

Looks legitimate however I personally would like to see the transformers under the cover to make sure it is not a fake.

A real one would probably have a type of switch mode power supply but the output tubes would still need output transformers.

I have seen some of those amps with solid state output that use and show a type of preamp tube that do absolutely nothing. :deal: :mad:
 
The JBLs have a good high sensitivity ( 2.83V@1m: 91dB ) and are nominally 8 ohms. But how much volume can you expect from a 3 watt amplifier? And your listening room should be a small living room at most.

Your speakers are rated at 91db sensitivity, a hundred would be better, but I don't think they'll struggle unless you really crank it up..
Fleawatt tube amps are best for low to moderate levels(in my limited experience)
I have a couple homebuilt(I didn't build them) tube monos(about 3 watts each) driving Klipsch KG4's, no complaints at all..
 
I owned that amp for a couple of years and used it in an office to drive bookshelf speakers. It was delightful in the winter especially, a little glow and heat from the tubes, and very nice sound from the speakers. It's a really nice way to try out flea watts and you might be surprised at how nice it will sound and how much you can get from it with high sensitivity speakers.
 
I see a kit on Ebay for under $200, SET with some really nice looking transformers. I'd give that a try, nice winter project.
 
yea, im thinking it would power them but not well.
i have a marantz 2215b that i roll in because marantz. i keep thinking maaaybe. but it doesn't do much for me. im imagining this will be kinda the same.
 
I'm still enjoying mine after 7 years. It usually powers a pair of Coral 3-ways or a pair of E-V Aristocrats. Both pair of speakers are approaching triple digit sensitivity. I don't know how they would power your JBL towers. Last weekend they didn't miss a beat powering a pair of 88db 4 ohm bookshelves in a near field set up. I front mine with a FX-AUDIO TUBE-01, 6J1 active pre. That adds a little more tube flavor and can add gain but not in its usual volume position.

Other than a SE 6GW8 receiver it's my only non PP tube amplifier so I don't have a lot of experience in the SE realm. For someone with the right speakers and expectations I can recommend it.

Love the rare bronze color! I bought a black one a few months ago and can’t stop listening to it. Bought upgraded tubes on eBay for under $40 and the thing really sings. I have 5 other tube amps that cost between $500 and $3000 and without hesitation I can recommend this little amp. Powers my Klipsch Heresy’s (99db) perfectly in a medium sized room and little ADS bookshelf speakers (88db) in the bedroom… where it’s playing now. Vocals and instruments sound natural and the imaging is wide and deep. I can only imagine how great your system sounds with EV Aristocrats. Enjoy!
