I went down a similar path as yours when I decided to upgrade my system a couple of years ago. It was overwhelming and I bought pretty much anything that I thought would make my stereo sound better as long as it was cheap. I recently had an epiphany and I'm getting the gear down to a more manageable level.
My best resources are the members on this site. I've met several local AKers who have taught me and helped me. I'm no tech, but I've learned some basics here on the site and I read many of the threads about restoration and repair projects. See if there is an AK gathering near your area. Good luck!
