I had the pleasure of meeting Zilch today. Duffinator, his friend Coy (sp?) and we met at Zilch's when Duffy went to go pick up his Altec 604s.
I have to say I was very impressed or rather blown away with his custom JBLs. They were hands down the best speakers I've ever heard. And I do not say this lightly. They were in custom cabinets his friend John built. John, btw also used to build cabinets for the Grateful Dead. We also got to hear John's beautifully designed stage monitors he himself built. He is also a musician. The one of two, Zilch JBLs that we listened to had JBL compression drivers & horns, two 8 inch mids, coupled with 15 inch bass subs and custom cross-overs.
We listened to Little Feat, Indie.Arie, and Roger Waters. I was hearing things I did not know existed on those albums. It was like have the band in the same room. I know a lot of guys say that but the band was there! The drums on the Little Feat album, both Coy and I could hear the drum vibrations of the pedal. We could even hear the pick! The detail was absolutely mind blowing. The soundstage with Indie.Arie was just luscious. The string section on one of the Roger Water's tracks nearly brought me to my knees. Now I understand why Duffy wants some, because now so do I!
The guy who worked on one of Duffy's Altecs also agreed that Zilch speakers were very good. This is from a guy who is locally known for handcrafting violins and cellos. Talk about talent.
Zilch is an older gentleman and is rather soft spoken, easy going kinda guy with a great sense of humor. What further impressed me was his methodology when testing and building speakers and crossovers. Absolutely no guess work here. He is very deliberate and analytical. His rather large two garages, while cluttered looks like a JBL factory. With high drool factor speakers, parts and test equipment stuffed to the gills. He had enough original blue JBL grill cloth to easily cover several city blocks (no exaggeration). He definitely knows what he's talking about.
In the 4 hours I was there I learned more about speakers than I've ever known. He was generous, patient and thorough with his explanations. Not only did we get to hear the speakers but we could see how they responded when they were graphed and further graphed accounting for room acoustics. I even learned how to properly use my own simple spectrum analyzer just watching him.
Thanks Zilch I had fun!
Duffy you left to early. I picked up a load of really great vinyl at Amoeba and Rasputin! I probably would've bought more but the meter was running!
