I think I understand where you are coming from.
I derived great joy in working with this Telefunken changer rescued from a dead console


I liked the skeletonized look of it


But I made a plinth for it

I understand the appeal and I am drawn to it as well

If you are looking around wearing glasses does that mean what you are seeing out there created by mother nature and man has regressed? Are the colors less intense, is the sky not blue are the reds, yellow and oranges less intense. Of course they aren't. Same goes for your hearing. Just because you can't hear quite as well as you once did doesn't mean the sound of the performance has changed. So why would you compromise the sound of the recording by using lo fi sound equipment before your brain has a chance to interpret the sound. The recording of the performance should be the best version of the sound you can justify!

The most important thing though is that you are having fun enjoying your music.

I'm no stranger to audio equipment from various eras. And I have what some would consider relatively high end equipment ( no, nothing truly high end, call it medium high end). I love good music played on good systems.

Lately, however, I've found myself thrilled by old equipment. And I mean old. Definitely not high end, or even middle.

I recently purchased a Garrard Type A. It came with a GE VR II cart. I'm playing it over an Aiyima El cheapo amp (modern of course) and a set of also recently purchased Wharfedale W40 speakers.

That Garrard Type A is a great turntable. The old gear can sound quite magical. Here is the setup I have used with older equipment:



Garrard RC-88 record player, Bell Sound amplifier and Eber house brand speaker.
