I'm so excited!!!! DSS-E6

So I am on vacation, left one of the attractions and driving to the place we are staying trying to find something to do to waste time in the rain.... my girlfriend spots a little place called "The hi-fi house" and asks if I want to check it out.

Mind you, in my house I have 2 sets of pioneer DSS-9, a set of pioneer S-710, 2 pairs of Bose 901, a pair of bose 201, and a 5.1 Klipsch Synergy F3 system.... so the last thing I need is anything else audio! (Sweet of the girl to ask if I wanted to stop though!)

The place was kinda run down looking from the outside, not a store front but rather a house with a business operating from it. We stop and I go in.

Inside, I was greeted by an old man and his wife, asked if they could help me with anything. I asked if they had any carver amplifiers laying around, the guy said sure, we have all kinds of them! I smile and start looking at the shelves and shelves of vintage electronics, when he informs me he was only kidding - nothing like that in there.

So I tell them I am gonna look around, and walk farther in; I make it to the auditioning room. I auditioned a pair of Klipsch reference towers, which I really was not too impressed with, and looking around the cluttered room the lady tells me half of the speakers aren't even for sale when I ask to hear the old klipsch cornwalls they have, because her husband is a collector... :|

Then, out of the corner of my eye, stacked behind and under stuff, I notice a pair of Pioneer DSS-E6!!!! I told her I wanted to hear them, and she asked me "REALLY???" in a surprised voice. We got to talking about them and she informed me that they had another set, still sealed in the box! She hooked one up, and they were just what I expected them to be. I asked on the price, and she said "Well, they were $600 speakers" I informed her I would not pay that for them as I found my 2nd set of DSS-9 for $400. She said OK, how about $300? Needless to say, I got a brand new set, sealed in the factory pioneer box with the pioneer tape on it and never powered. The lady told me they couldn't sell them, because "no one wanted us to push some cheap, crappy pioneers on them". I never would have imagined this place had much I wanted, but they did have a lot of hi fi stuff in there, and I feel like I found a gold vein getting the one set still in the box, in addition to knowing where another nice set is! I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY HAVE HAD THESE SPEAKERS BRAND NEW FOR OVER 20 YEARS!!!!

BTW, the DSS-E6 sounds every bit as good as the DSS-9's or DSS-E10's (which are the same speaker anyway), just not as big or powerful - but they blew the $800 pair of klipsch reference towers I auditioned out of the water for sound quality!!!!!

I am gonna have to quit buying speakers one day - but I might just have to get the other set first.....

Cool fiind. Those DSS-E6's are bit rare. I don't think I've seen anyone talk of them or even seen them on ebay at all. Though I do remember them quite well when I got my DSS-7's. Nice speaker, congrates on the find. Was the foam surround on yours still good after all these years. I'd like to think that if they've been in a box with plastic wrap that the air didn't get to them to deteriorate the surrounds.

The foam on the set I auditioned (which were in the "showroom") was in just fine condition, and they sounded great. We didn't crack the seal on the box for the ones I got, I assume they are in perfect shape but don't really know 100% for sure. I'm not home yet, nor do I even really have a place to put them, but I am thinking they will make nice bedroom speakers - I will probably keep the pioneer tape intact until I have it all lined out where to put them.

I hadn't seen any E6's before, looks like the same tweeter on your DSS-7, with a very similar, (but not the same) midrange. They are an 8" woofer according to the specs, but look a bit bigger than your normal 8". The part that I find most interesting is each speaker has it's own screen, and there are no grilles on them. Very attractive to me, actually, as I prefer the grille off look, but like the idea of having some protection to the speakers - but maybe in my bedroom I wouldn't have to worry too much about it anyway.

No mid and high adjustments, but I keep them at the 0 position on my DSS-9's anyhow, and let my ADC sound shaper do the balancing act.

I do know the set I auditioned sounded absolutely great, and while $300 isn't exactly a steal of a price (I think if they were at a pawn shop $50 or less would have bought them), but these people did know what they had - and just hadn't found the right buyer for them until I walked in the door....

I am seriously considering getting the other set when funds allow, just because!

The biggest reason I went ahead and snatched them was when I compared the klipsch synergy B3's to them (was gonna get to make my 5.1 setup a 7.1), the klipsches cost more for a 2 way, and don't sound as good, making these slightly bigger babies seem like an even better deal. Can't beat 20 year old NEW vintage high end speakers!

update!!!!

I did go back and buy the second pair. Got them for even cheaper, because when I finally cracked the seal on the first pair, hooked them up and PURE AWESOMENESS in sound, for about half a song before the woofer surrounds blew apart in both speakers. Oh well, I semi expected it, as I had to replace the foam on all three sets of my DSS-9. I also since have come up with an extra mid and tweeter and crossover, plus an IMG infinity 8" woofer to make a DSS-9 center channel. I also found a pair of mids and tweeters from another set of DSS-E6's to make a center channel for those too..... that's 2 sets of pioneer DSS elite 5 speaker surround systems!

Now the bad news - the girlfriend wanted a change in look in the living room, and walnut cabinets are out..... damn.

The good news, she's still understanding of this bad habit, now I have maple Infinity interludes in there (IL 60, 10, 36C)....... and then she wanted black instead...... so I found a killer deal on craigslist for a set of Infinity Alpha 50's and Primus 250's - the interludes beat the crap out of those though, so they stayed.

The IL 60's downright have the loudest effin' bass I've ever heard in a home setting, which is something I love about them, but the pioneers have softer, wider range, real sound and better transient response. Home theater is the name of the game in the living room now, but eventually I hope to build a nice big room for those pioneers to pump full of sound. Still searching for just 1 more set of DSS-9's so I can have double stacked front and back.

I highly recommend this speaker.
