I'm thinking of buying a Dual 1019.

It looks to be in good shape and the price isn't too bad, I think he might come down a bit, been for sale for a few weeks. I have a Thorens TD-320 and a Technics SL 23, so I don't really need another turntable. But the 1019 is suppose to be the best of Dual and looks amazing. I am concerned about it being an idler wheel and changer, with the VTA issue I would only use it as a single play unit. The cartridge is a Shure M75 Type D(which looks a little beat up/old) supposedly new when he bought the table and lightly used by him. It's in a United Audio plinth. Just wonder if it is more trouble than it is worth, as I'm not a DIYer and there aren't a lot of good techs in this area.
**There is also a Dual 1219 with a Grado cartridge locally, for about the same price but I like the looks of the 1019 better.**

This is the sellers description:
"It's been in a closet for some time so I took it in to get checked out and lubed up and it's playing wonderfully.
Also included (though not pictured) is the original dustcover. It's has some cracks but is completely functional. I'll get a photo up of that. There is one small nick on the back of the unit. I will get s photo of that also. Overall, I love this table. I just have more than I need. (Sorry for the crappy picture of the cartridge/stylus. I forgot to take one earlier and had to do it in low light."

You won't get a nay from me. I have 3 of them, though should whittle that down. :)

I am a fan of both the 1019 and 1219; they're both built and perform well, but they will both need service sooner or later. If you are not a DIYer and do not plan to learn the minimum needed to service a Dual, I'd suggest getting one that has been gone through already. I'm sure someone will chime in with the usual suggestions of Dual mechanics that pop up on AK!

How reliable are they, did you have to do much work on them?

Assuming it was properly serviced, it should be good for a long time.

Seller said had it "checked out and lubed".

Married to Duals. Have had and liked the 1019s. Don’t have any in the herd now. Got a little crazy on 1219s. They give you a 12 inch platter and a better head shell. The 1000 series Dual headshell can loose one or both channels due to loose contacts. Learned how to fix that issue. My low end 1010S had that problem. Glued the contacts with Epoxy and ended the problem. Haven’t had an issue in 4 yrs.
looks in nice shape. My 1010 has that wood base. One of the nicer ones sold by United Audio, the US distributor. I say get it if the price is right.

I have a 1219 with a Shure M95ed Cartridge, and a 1229q with a Shure V-15 III Cartridge. Both sound wonderful. I'm 100% sure I will acquire a 1019. The idler wheel can be "dressed", and if you do not intend to use the stacker, not an issue. GO FOR IT!

The 1019 is not that hard to service, and if you go on vinylengine, they have a page there and can help you with things. The main things to look at are the motor being lubed so it stays quiet, the cam underneath making sure it works properly for the auto functions, the head shell sleds can be purchased new aftermarket from patsaudio, his are spring loaded and I feel are better, the mute switch can be noisy (deoxit), and the arm can also get some static (deoxit as well). The idler wheel may have a flat spot, or be hard and can be "tuned up" DIY, or a new one bought for less than $50.00.

The 1019 is my favorite table of the Dual idler wheel types, and I have redone 3 of them totally. I use it both in single play mode and changer mode, and with the arm and VTA, just get a cork platter mat with the round record holder "bulbs" and it will help out with getting the arm parallel to the platter. I've used both MM and MC cartridges with mine.

Properly serviced, it should get you years of enjoyment out of it. Shure carts, Stanton, Pickering, Ortofon, and Denon have been my favorite carts on it. If you do use it in changer mode, try to use a stylus with a thicker cantilever if possible.

My 1019 is in my avatar picture at the bottom left.

The headshell issue can be eliminated with a high quality aftermarket repro, and the tracking angle issue can be fixed with a headshell shim. Both are made and sold by patsaudioparts on eBay.

The other guys have pretty much summed it up.

Of the 3 I have only 1 has been tricky and that was mostly around the muting switch. I also changed the RCA board on it allowing me to space the plugs further apart which works better with many cables.

I also like the aftermarket cartridge holder. It's tight fitting but better for signal integrity.

Just do it!!!! I have one that i bought for 100 bucks. Brought it home, slapped a cart on it and did nothing else and it works fine. And it was a dirty mess too.

Does the 10" platter bother any of you guys as it's not a regulation 12' platter? Does the 10" platter affect the sound at all?

You got lucky... that's rarely the case with Duals.

Absolutely not an issue.

I purchased a replacement re-engineered cartridge holder off of eBay and THAT made my 1019 perfect and completely reliable

Pat didn't include the shim with the cartridge holder when he first started selling them, but he does now.
