IMF TLS 50 speakers

Picked these up today for 20 bucks. I wanted the rat shack woofers. both tweets in one speaker are shot, the other speaker has a mid with a deformed surround, still sound ok though. My question is this, even in this stae with rat shack woofers there is alot of bass coming from these things. I have a set of SEAS woofers, should I use them? Should I try to find origianl parts? are they out there. i have read some good things about the transmission lins system used in thes boxes.

I can see the engineer now saying,"Well if we put enough different drivers in these speakers here at least one of 'em's gonna sound good to everyone who listens to these".

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm :saywhat:

Krimney, not trying to spoil your fun at getting a score. Finding anything in Canada for twenty bucks is an accomplishment worth rejoicing! 'sides, you probably got even more drivers to play with on the back of these right!? :)

Is there a 'duck and cover' smilie?

Nope no drivers on the back, but the specs on these indicate a frequency response from 23hz to inaudibility. bass like that will rival my 15" Mach 1s.
Apparently these were/are highly regarded for the transmission line technology. They are british made and some of the models used celestion and kef drivers. Thes soft domes look like peerless. Maybe a little piece of audio history...

You may wanna give a listen to IMF's before passing judgement.

For 20.00 bucks you made out like a bad dawg.

Oh crap, I just got it! IMF. Those are van speakers right? This guy that looks like Peter Lupus sells them out of a big unmarked s.w.a.t. van. ;)

Ok I think these are the MKII version as they have a 4" mid and a super tweeter. They are called compact? even though they are 3 feet high. lots of info on the site, thanks

Swapping in the same size driver from any random manufacturer is pretty much guaranteed not to work. Loudpeakers are designed as systems. The enclosure geometry, cross-over topology and driver configuration are all interrelated. Drivers that are the same size from different manufaturers are sonically different. They have different efficiencies, bandwidth, distortion levels, dispersion characteristics and on and on.

Your best bet is to find out who supplied the original drivers and hope that they are still in business. Even though the drivers will likely have been discontinued, they may have current models that are similar to the older ones. The previously listed website with IMF information is a good place to start.

Get Kam to add this "duck" smilie
