Impromptu So-Cal Meet Up Review

Hey Tim great write up. Let me know next time there is a tube get together as I have my ZU Dirty Weekend Speakers and want to try them on tubes. They are made for tubes but I am powering them with an Outlaw RR 2160. It is 110 watts SS and they love the power but they are supposed to be outstanding on tubes.
Absolutely!! Keep you posted on our next one. Would love to hear those!!

Let us revisit this shall we? I have recently been put in harms way and had to zig rather than zag. My zagging put me at ground zero of a pair of Ambiance Reference 1800. I have pined, and have a line on, a pair of L2030. I came across an epic 2030 restoration thread that most may know of here in AK. Well, he moved on to these 1800's. Intrigued, I searched them up...just so happened their was a pair in Ohio. Well, rule number one, no drunk buying!!

They will be here next week. :beerchug:

That said, I feel the next meet up should be soon. I would like to plan this one well in advance with clear objectives. I am not sure if this will be within the month or six months... I just know it needs to have the time needed. There are so many great options. @Greg Nal I want to make sure we have you at this one and will work with your timeline on this.

I would host and kick the wife and kids out for an entire day. I would need help the day before to help me arrange everything. I would be moving the entire living room out and setting up long way to make more room.

I will start a separate thread soon getting this going. I would really also like to have a live feed with a nice compression mic to get the best sound out of the room so others could step in that could not make it. This will all take some real time to get together and planned with clear objectives and agenda.

So... let us revisit? @Rmac587 @2270 in play @BirdOnAWire @triplelatte

@toddalin I need to get the switcher back to you. It was not functioning properly and maybe we can take another look at it. It would be great to have this dialed in for this meet up as we could make somewhat blind tests. PM me and we can coordinate if you or ok with that.

Any time. Always someone here and other than my weekly massage, I got nowhere in particular to be. Pick a time when you can do some listening and if you want to bring a tube amp, we can see how it sounds compared to the Melton.

Sounds good Toddalin. I will reach out to you on a good day and time. Week or weekend? Weekends work better for me. Maybe even a Friday after work? Like 5:00? Talk soon.

It's kind of ironic reading this today; wasn't it right around 2 years ago to the week that we had the last big get-together pre-Covid? I'm really ooking forward to being able to have more of them!

Me too bud!! So, I am trying to find a good date and will start a thread on it under events and meetups. We can go from there. I need to have a very defined itinerary. Limit the number of amps that would be offered for consideration and break them down to the top ones wanting to be auditioned. Anyway, keep you all posted.

Works for me. If I know you are coming, I will pre-warm up an amp of your choice.

I'm in and have every other weekend as possibilities. Need to know what's on your wishlist for me to bring as long as its a tube amp: Bryce has my Fairchild 255's to give 'em a once over and will get those back in April or so, I've got a reworked MC 240, MC30 monoblocks, Ampex EL34 Signature monoblocks, Scott LK 150, Altec A100A monoblocks and 345a 40W stereo tube amp, Almorro A205A SEP tube amp (5watt) and a recent acquisition--a Gordon W 20W stereo tube amp. " "Custom stereo power amp based on Magnovox AMP132/AMP142 output transformers and a RCA Power transformer which is a lot more heavier duty than that the AMP132. This results in a very stiff, quiet power supply, which doesn't vary in voltage significantly between idle and full power and only takes 1.3volts input to reach full power." Also have Quicksilver horn monoblocks, Eico HF 81 integrated, Fisher X-202 integrated and a Leben 300CS 300x, Sargent Rayment SR 14 mono's and SR 5100 stereo tube amp. I do have a dark horse candidate: a Sherwood S-365 monoblock with a Sherwood S4400 monoblock/stereo tube preamp that is rare and well regarded. Sherwood tends to be underrepresented in the discussions of great gear. I have a cool Voice of Music low watt integrated that is surprisingly good.

There's lots of other stuff but not all has been gone through including Citation II, Fisher 70AZ monoblocks, Fisher 200 monoblocks (beasts!), Bell 6060 and Bell 3D, Fisher KX-200, SA-100 and 300 (but you know all about those), Quad II's.

On the preamp side, I have a reworked Fisher 202T (400Cx preamp section), Conrad Johnson PV2Ar, Altec 445a, Eico HF-85, 400CX2 (y'all have heard THAT one), McIntosh C20 and MX110, Scott LK 21, 122, and 130 preamps and an all original Marantz 7C (purchased new by my dad with an 8b) and 7T, but y'all have had your fill of 8b's.

And for another time I have an Accuphase stack: C200 pre, A300 amp and T100 Tuner

I figure you've got the speaker side covered.

Like I said, I have options...

Um..... holy crap!!! Well, when i start the thread we can all vote on what to have at the meetup. Certainly not all there that you have. We would need to hire body guards and rent a U-Haul to get them all. lol.

That said, we can decide later, and within time permitting. But wow!! this is going to get good! Yes, speaker side we will have Ambience Reference 1800's with sub. the Ref1800's are 97db and can run on 10 watts wonderfully and easily. So all tubes will love it. I think we make this a tube only affair.

Do you have a couple small receivers/integrated that I could use in testing? I have a source and speakers to use. Previously, I didn't have actual equipment and testing was done using a continuity meter rather than actual functioning equipment.

SS or Tube? Watts? The answer will be yes, just need to know what best to bring to you.

SS is fine for testing. Small and easy to move is best. Watts are unimportant. Would be nice if they had a pre-out/amp-in jumper to be able to test various combinations.

But you are certainly welcome to bring a tube integrated if you want to hear it with the Mermans and compare to the Melton. And, I would like to compare to the Melton.

Hi guys,

One of the forum members is bringing his 300B amp and tube preamp down from Pasadena on Feb 26 for a listening session. I want to hear if the 300B sounds different than the KT-88s in the Melton on the Mermans. I just don't get that articulation that I get with the Yamaha and am wondering if the 300B will do better as claimed by several. We can accomodate a couple guests to join us.

Thanks,

Todd

I am tentatively down. I will confirm when I get home. We have family coming and I think it may be next weekend but not sure. If not, I am in. I will bring my Marantz 8 modified and my Fisher 400CX2 preamp. Should be fun.

**** Dang, family is in town next weekend. Wish I could make it.
