In a Sansui turntable rabbit hole, is this worth it?

I’ve been on a quest to repair my father’s Sansui SR-313 since he passed away last year. It’s in perfect working order, except it’s missing the counterweight, and the little metal tube that goes over the back of the tonearm beneath the counterweight. Months of searching has made it clear that these items are near impossible to come by... I’ve not even seen a whisper of a broken SR-313 for sale for parts, so apparently these turntables are somewhat rare.

I have the opportunity to purchase an SR-717, also missing the counterweight... but containing the metal tube. It’s being sold for parts but they claim it turns. I don’t even know if the metal tube will fit the SR-313, and there’s a good chance I’ll now have two Sansui turntables with missing/impossible to find counterweights. I have the approximate weight of the 313 counterweight, so there’s a good chance I can eventually make *something* work with a bit of trial and error... I guess what I’m wondering is:

- Is this nuts? Should I give up? The seller is asking under $200 but above $100 for the broken SR-717
- Does anyone have any idea what the approximate weight of an SR-717 counterweight is, in case this one proves easier to find parts for?

You are correct, and thank you! I actually reached out to the email address associated with that shop a few weeks back and briefly spoke to the owner’s wife. She very nicely offered to send me the counterweight if she ever came across it, but is in a different field and is unfamiliar with the parts. In the meantime, I’ve been continuing to scour the universe for potential replacement parts, or ANYTHING that might work. I appreciate you taking the time to answer!
