In Need of help. What type of speakers do I have?

Please help identify what I am in possession of if you are able. Thank you.

A year ago, a neighbor traded me his speakers, subwoofer, and four Crown rack amps for 20190518_082302.jpg 20190518_082324.jpg the use of my truck to move. A couple days ago I hooked them up for the first time but only with a Denon receiver. Not good. Hurt my ears. The highs these produced--ugh. I do not have the cables to hook the rack amps up presently.

Questions:

Has anyone seen this type of speaker? Why is the tweeter (I guess mid too) rectangle? What is the name of that type of tweeter?

My take is that these are not home audio speakers. Maybe they were set up in a school auditorium or church. Idk. What do you think? Rack amps are not home audio equip, correct?

It's called a ribbon driver, covers midrange and treble. It is a home speaker. Get the correct cables and then set the Denon correctly. :)

That is a bottom side view of speaker. They were custom made in L.A. in either the 80s or the 90s--I cannot remember. I see that someone has posted that they are indeed home audio speakers. Crazy. I wonder when the are set up correctly (I could have sworn I did. I do have a better receiver that I can attach my Sony amp to) if they will sound better than the Infinity Overture 3s I currently use.

Than you for responding.

When the guy gave me the speakers, he told me he had already given away the equip that he used to power it. But then he finds these in his closet and gives them to me too. My research on these amps suggest they are not home audio amps, which is what lead me to believe neither are the speakers. So now I wonder what he was using those amps for. Am I wrong in concluding those amps are not home audio? That is a lot of power. I wonder if these speakers need all that power to sound good. 20190518_093133.jpg 20190518_093118.jpg

This is crazy too: I seem to recall he said these speakers cost him $20,000. I did not believe him. He was a bit skewed thinking wise, so I did not believe him. Now I am thinking that maybe he was telling the truth.

it looks like you have enuff amps to bi-amp the speakers and have one left for sub duty

My room is only 12 x 12. That is probably too much for this size room. But what if these speakers are the type to need that kind of power to sound good? Oy.

I have a Sony TA N330ES amp (in use in bedroom with a parasound p/ld-1100 preamp that the guy also gave me) I do not know if my Pioneer VSX43 (50 dollar score. Like new) can be used with it. But I know the Marantz SR5006AV I have (10 dollar score) works with an external amp.

I love the Infinitys Overture 3s I have (not so much for rock and roll, but for movies they are great). The question then is which one will sound better.

I am thinking out loud here. I am novice. I really do not know much about the audio world.

Lol. Yep, it fit in the house.

As I was driving over to a family member's house about an hour ago, I noticed a speaker sitting in the driveway of a yard sale. They didn't know if it worked, but they sold me a Klipsch RC-35 center for ten dollars. Crazy morning. I am so out of my league here.

Question: let's say those big arse speakers did cost $20 grand in the 80s or 90s, is that some kind of guarantee they will sound better than Infinity Overture 3s? I can see how this is a matter of taste, but theoretically speaking, should that assumption be made? I mean, these speakers are custom made, yes, but by whom? There is no markings on them indicating the maker.

I would recommend that you sell this equipment, buy something a little more in your comfort zone then bank the rest of the money. :smoke:

That's what I am thinking exactly. That requires figuring out a price point. First I buy proper speaker cables/wires for them and try them out via my Sony amp and one of the receivers. See how they sound that way first.

I could use them as fronts, the Overtures as rears, and just maybe this Klipsch I just bought at a garage sale will sound close enough to the fronts. Idk, I have been fine without 5 point this and 7 point that, but since I have the gear, why not hook it all up.

Those tall skinny speakers are not going to put out much (if any) bass.
Are you using them WITH the subwoofer that came with the deal?
If not that probably explains why they seem so sharp and searing to your ears.
EDIT/ADDED-- I just saw another picture you added in post #5
Is that the lower part of the cabinet for the tall skinny speakers in post #1?
If so, it appears they do have a bass (woofer, not a subwoofer) driver so the lack of an external subwoofer may not be the cause for your dislike.

I too have a Crown amp that I've used in my main home system.
Many of us here do.
But primarily they are/were more for "professional" use in clubs, etc.

I have not hooked up sub yet. I have yet to figure out how to hook it up. It was a shoot in the dark that I was able to hook the speakers up and make them work. Four speaker posts on one speaker was new news to me. I did a little bit of study before I hooked them up. Still, didn't, when I looked on back of the receiver, I just guessed (deduced I suppose) how to connect the wires, and it ended up working.

I have no idea why a subwoofer would make that shrill sound dissipate, but I will give it a try--eventually.

I'm using a pair of bridged Crown's XLS-402's from that exact model line to drive my TL subs. IME the biggest difference between "pro" and "home" amps is how they are perceived.

Ultumax: Please lighten up with those awful pictures. What's the point?:dunno:
