In Search of Pioneer PL-550 Dust Cover and Hinges

I absolutely love my PL-550, but it hasn't had a dust cover cover since I've owned it. Lately the little ones (ages 3 and 5) have become more and more interested in "Dad's cool record player", and I'm feeling like it really needs a cover. I'm perfectly fine picking up a new aftermarket cover, but the hinges seem to be the problem. Does anyone have a good source for the hinges other than watching the big auction site? I also wouldn't mind a reference for a place to get a cover. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

eBay would be about it. Try to figure out what other models used those hinges. (I'm guessing PL-530 and PL-570 and probably some others.) There are several sources on eBay for new reproduction dustcovers (without hinges). Figure on spending around $150.00 to get everything.

Id be happy if I could get a cover and hinges for $150. From what I've been seeing recently on ebay it seems like if hinges do come up, I'd be paying $100+ just for the hinges, most of the covers I've seen are about $150 with shipping. It looks like I'd be in $250-$300 total, which is a bit more expensive than I was hoping.

There's a third seller, "turntabledepot", who make replacement dustcovers but they seem to be inactive on eBay right now. They appear to be in some sort of transition but they say that they're shipping. You can contact them through their web site.

When you're trying to figure out what an item should go for on eBay, don't look at active listings. Look at Sold listings. People can ask anything they want but that doesn't mean they'll get it. As with all things, patience is it's own reward.

Thanks John. Like you said, looks like it will just take some patience to find the hinges.

In looking through the assortment of hinges for sale and sold on eBay, I can confirm that the PL-570 (1970s direct drive) and PL-530 as wel las the PL-550 use the same hinges. I'd suggest setting up saved searches for those three models so that, any time someone lists a set, you'll get an email notification.

And turntabledepot is still shipping, not shopping.

Don't buy a dustcover on Ebay. Try JMK Displays in New York. I have bought several from them at about $90 shipped to me here in Arizona. Every bit as good as anything on Ebay and better than most.

PM me regarding hinges

I bought this one a month ago for my Yamaha YP-D8. It's 3/16" thick three piece. Back-top-front all one piece rolled on front and back, then the two sides glued on. They also do 1/8" and 1/4". I usually buy them 1/8" thick. but wanted a stronger one for this. I would recommend the 3/16" for your Pioneer.

I paid $93.55 for this one and that included the shipping to Arizona. You can't beat that unless you can find someone local.

Wow! That looks amazing. Did you have to give them detailed measurements, or do they have specs for common covers on hand? My only concern would be that I've never had a dust cover with this turntable, so I don't have any measurements.

If you go to their website they have a form for turntable dust covers. Each one is custom made to the specs you must provide. .There is a 1/16" margin of error, so if you don't want a dimension to exceed a certain value you can specify that it not be exceeded. You will have to drill your own holes for the hinges. I have bought at lease six from them and each one has been perfect. I used to buy from Turntable Depot on Ebay, but these are better and at least 40% cheaper. It takes a couple weeks to get one.

Anymore questions, just ask.

If you can verify that a 530 will work, give me a PM. I have a parts unit and I'll have to pull it out and see what conditions are.

Thanks Jon. I'll have to dig up the oem dust cover measurements. Also, sent you a PM.

I think you'll find that the 530 won't work (It's smaller) but that the 570 will.

Thank you so much, but I think the 530 cover is too small, as someone just posted. I think I will most likely order a new one.
