increase file volume

What options do I have to increase the volume on a flac or wav file?

I have a half dozen old songs that I'm sure are actually at the right level but rather than drop all my other ones down it would be nice to have these songs playable in a shuffle with the others.

Are there good options for boosting the level of those few files?

It depends on what application you're using to play the files. Many music player applications have a normalize feature. That should solve your problem.

If you have an iMac, you can import the songs into Garage Band, then export to iTunes with volume normalization enabled. This does not compress but raises all levels so that the highest levels are at maximum volume.

Most media managers will have a 'volume analysis' function, which will analyze the tracks, and add a replay gain tag. This replay gain tag can then be used by players to level or normalise volume during playback.

Adding a replay gain tag does not modify the original samples stored in the file.

Media managers will usually also offer 'volume levelling', which _does_ permanently modify the samples stored in the file.

It is generally considered that volume analysis, and the use of replay gain tags, is preferable to volume levelling, since the original ripped samples are not modified.
