Infinity 2500 Rebuild Help!

I got these in a trade and the tweeters are not working. No noise, nothing. I figured it was an old cap or something along those lines as everything seems to be in good shape. (all the foam, domes, cabinets, etc) I took it to a local shop which had good reviews who wanted to charge me $80 per speaker (after a $40 bench fee) for new tweets and crossovers. The tech told me that when he took out the tweeters, the paper seemed like it had been wet and had rotted out. I told him it wasn't worth it and brought them home. Since I had nothing to lose (besides the $40 I threw away) I took the tweeters out and for the life of me can't find where there would be any paper. They are soft dome tweeters with foam underneath and a solid metal surround. I've been looking for an easy project to start learning speaker/electronic basics on and think this may be the one. I want to order crossovers for them but can't seem to find what I need. From what I can find these are 2 way 10" bookshelf speakers with a 4 ohm load. Any help putting me on the right track is much appreciated.

WELCOME TO AK!!
Any picture of the speakers? Do the tweeters emit any sound when connected directly to a sound source? check with a multimeter for Dc resistance, to discard or confirm they are blown...

I don't think you need new xovers... Perhaps just used tweeters from ebay...

Here are some pics. I tried hooking them up to a sound source and got nothing. I don't have a multimeter, but i'll pick one up tonight and see if I can get a reading as i'm sure i'll need one anyways. Would you recommend staying with the Polydax tweeters or is there a better substitute I can go for while I'm at it? Thanks for the help.

Cool vintage looking speaker!

I think is this one: (no picture at Infinity web site, but it's the only "2500"...)

I think is better to keep the original tweeter. just connect it to your amp, at a very low volume, with the bass tone control set to minimum, to see if they produce sound.

It seems that the crossover have only one 4uF capacitor. Check "jumping" or "bridging" it, to see if it's not working.

This audax tweeter will be fine, i've used one very similar as a replacement, but it would be good to see what's wrong with your tweeters...

Anyway, I would go for the TW025A0, it's less than half the price, and it's a proven tweeter used in several hi-fi speakers...

EDITED: You are right, it seems the Polydax is the TW034X0.

The one I've suggested is TW025A0, but its a bit less efficient (90dB vs 93dB)

Here are the specs for both tweeters.

The TW034X0 says "Replaceable voice coil (RW034X0)". Perhaps you can get just the Voice Coil.....

I tested the tweeters and didn't get any sound through either one of them. RIP. The flange on the 1" tweeter is actually smaller than the cutout on the infinity box and I'm having a real hard time finding real deal "polydax" replacements. I'm afraid the big boy is my only option. :( While I have the box apart should I go ahead and replace(upgrade/mod) the lonely cap? I figure if i'm already in this deep, I might as well create the undisputed champion of Infinity 2500's, hehe.

Wait :)

Here is another tweeter that looks like yours, but the faceplate is smaller....

As you can see, there are many models, very similar appearance, but the most important you need to match is the "sensitivity". Try to find a picture of the exact match, including the magnet, or write to AUDAX France, they can give you the exact model of your tweeter.

The "HR" at the back of your tweeter made me think in the "HD100D25 HR", but it has 2 more screws at the front that you don't have...

If you get a 93dB tweeter instead of a 90dB one, you will have to attenuate it.

The specs of the speaker says they are 86 dB, so I doubt they were build with a 93dB tweeter.

Here is a link to the Audax archive:

Keep searching :)

Repairing is also an option !!!

I've seen that the TW034 tweeters are 34mm domes, and the infinity spec sheet says "25mm dome tweeter", so the "025" series will be more similar.

Anyway, at this point I think you can start a new thread asking for "help identifying polydax tweeter" :)

Audax HD100D25

According to the specs the Audax HD100D25 outer dimensions are 100mm which is about 4 inches and too small for the Infinity 2500 tweeter hole. Actually I have 2 or 4 extra tweeters for the Spica TC50 which are coincidentally the Audax HD100D25 if I remember correctly.
