Infinity 3-way advice

I have a pair of very nice RSe that I think are lacking something in midrange. So I'm interested to try a pair of 3-ways. There are two available locally: RSb and RS-4B. Can anyone comment on the sonic differences between the two? Both have the EMIT but not the EMIM. FWIW, I really like the low and highs on the RSe pair, but the mid are lacking.

If neither of these is a good choice, is there another pair I should keep my eyes peeled for?

I would personally go with the 4b's. I like the sound of the Polydome mids, especially the imaging. The 4b's also play deeper in the bass and, if in good shape, have much nicer cabinets. 4b's were my first "real" pair of speakers many years ago.
 
4b are very good speakers, go for them!

Tedrick, is it genuine grill cloth on your RS-IIIb?
 
I have owned both, still have the RSb's. I would go for the 4b's if space, & money don't factor in. I love my RSb's, and sold the 4b's to a friend because he liked them. Would have kept them if it werent for that. The 4b's can play loud and clear with enough clean power. Very nice speaker.

Interesting. How would you compare the 4b's to the ADS 980s? I also have a pair of 910s, but they're not set up right now.

I posted last year some time when I bought a pair of L400s and A/Bed them with the RSe. Preferred the former over the latter because of the wonderful mid range, though the Infinity's had better bass and treble extension. Playing together they sounded pretty sweet!

The 4b's had the ability to play louder, with more kick than the 980's, but the 980's midrange presence was much better imo. The 980's also seemed to fill in the lower level bass better. Between the 2 speakers, the 980's would stay. I do like the 4bs, but for my listening preference, I like the ADS more.

Have you replace the capacitor in your crossover? It is from about 1981 and if it is original, it may no longer be in spec. The tech sheet shows a single 9.5uf.
 
Connecting two set of Infinitys to improve midrange?

Hi There. Hope this question adds to the "3-way " advice thread.
If my idea is potentially dangerous then hopefully you guys can set me straight!

I have RSa's and think they are great. However would like to boost their mid range by looking at combining them with a three way companion. Maybe RS7's

Are the Rs7's well regarded?

Could you connect both RSa and RS7 in a serial set up on the same speaker out put to create a combined sound similar to an A+B selection but using the serial wiring to keep the ohm loads at no lower than 4ohm ?
RSa (4ohm)
RS7 (6ohm)
Combined in serial formation should be 10ohm? (i think:scratch2:)
Parallel formation (A+B) would be 4 and 6ohm and too low for a lot of amps that require min 8ohm speakers with A+B selected

My amp is currently under powered for the infinitys (searching for an alternative as we speak at least 60wpc) but can handle 4ohm load if selected on A or B speakers only. Its a SX550. I'm keen on the pioneer amps / receivers and I think most will require min 8 ohm for A+B speakers selection

I guess per channel config would be.........
x1 EMIT (black and white)
x1 EMIT K (Grey and apricot coloured)
x1 5" Mid
X1 8" Bass
x1 11" Bass
