What a day for big Infinities! I put another layer of Feed-n-Wax on my Quantum 2s this morning. In the afternoon, I discovered that a shop near my place has a cosmetically near-excellent-condition pair of RS 4.5s consigned for sale... and I've been mulling all day over the asking price of $3000, which seems too much on the high side to me, for one that needs refoaming of all woofers. (I don't know how negotiable the price is, but I don't think I can get these at this time. A bit frustrating; I sure would like 'em, if only they were cheaper!) Now a few hours later, this thread...
Well, I guess it's good to know that these things are still around, at least from time to time. I think I need to start a special fund to build up enough cash reserve for something like those Betas, and then just wait for the right opportunity to "pounce"...
Such a chance might almost have come back in August. At the hi-end audio show here, a guy told me about an elderly doctor who lived near him in Malaysia with a set of Infinity Betas, who was eager to sell them. His neighborhood had been declining, and he was concerned about becoming a target for robbery, because of his fine house and his age. He wanted to move to a more suitable place, and sell off the speakers that he knew would be too big for where he'd move and might be stolen eventually where he was, anyway. It sounded like a real opportunity to get a deal on a set of Betas, but I lost contact with him and have no way to follow-up now. I only know that there is a set of available Betas somewhere in Malaysia! :sigh:
One day, one day...
In the meantime, I think I'll drown my feelings of Infinity deficiency in listening sessions with the Modulus, Kappa, Quantum 2 and RS II speakers... Heck, that ain't so bad!
