Infinity Kappa 7.1 Series II Speakers -- How'd I do?

Hey all, I picked up a pair of these lovely speakers yesterday for $150. The seller was the original owner. She still had her original receipt and the owner's manual. I haven't had any time to listen to them besides the quick audition, but they appear to be in fantastic shape. I've noticed that the Kappa 8 & 9 speakers appear to be highly regarded, but I can't find much on these 7.1 Series II speakers. Did I do well? As far as quality is concerned, are these comparable? I noticed the mid-range driver looks very similar to that of the higher-end Kappa's, but the Emit-R looks a bit different. Any info or insight is appreciated!

I'd say you did just fine at $150.
Those polydomes appear to be in very good condition. And the polydomes are usually the first component to suffer from age.
 
you didn't get the deal of the century, but, you didn't get burnt, either.

some so called purists will assert that they aren't equal to their holy grail old Kappa's (I own and love a pair of old Kappa's myself), but, if they are your first Infinity speakers, I'd say your in for a sonic treat. Fire those babies up and give them a listen. Depending on what you're used to listening to, you may very well be amazed. Good luck and enjoy.

Are these suitable for a HT setup? The user manual mentions that they are very musical and will reproduce distortion.

I'm not sure if it matters, but they are a matching pair (Serial #J074-013951 & J074-013952). They were purchased brand new in 1997 at $1,200 for the pair from a Harman Kardon outlet store.

Yes, the K7.1's will work great in an HT setup. Bonus: the K7.1's are not as difficult to drive as some of the earlier models, so any good quality amplifier should make them sing.
 
You got a good deal. I recently sold two pairs for $350 and $300. While I was demoing them to the buyers, I realized that I forgot how good they sound. I almost didn't want to sell them. If I ever come across the 8.1 or 9.1 for a fair price, I'll be all over them.

I used these for home theater before I went over to Definitive. They were great for HT. The center is the Kappa Video Center or CS Video (same speaker). For rears, you can go with the 6.1, 5.1, Infinitesimal IV, or another center as the manual suggests.
 
:thmbsp: I really really think you should "drop" them off at my house for further testing though...:naughty::D My RS-5000's are lonely :)

Haha, I certainly feel good about my purchase. I noticed that they are "biampable" (uncertain if that is correct terminology), but I don't quite understand how that works. I don't have any standalone amplifiers, just various receivers. If I were to use that function, how would volume control work for the speakers? How would I control inputs to the receivers? From that perspective, I am a complete noobie.
 
So... did you ever figure out bi-amping your Kappas? They should sound really great when driven with respectable amplification.
 
I'd say that's a steal, really. Those will sound ridiculously good for that amount of money.

I have some Kappa 6's and love 'em! It's a very engaging sound.
 
I sold my pair for $200 last summer because i was afraid they were going to get ruined in storage.Man, I'm really regretting it now for selling them.....:tears:
 
I have an oak pair that are flawless too, I got them from my dad who is the original owner. I would have to disagree with Knee' and say you got a damn good deal.
 
Bi Amping Kappas

This is only the 2nd time I have posted anyting on here but was reading this because there are a pair of Infinity Kappa 7.1 Series II identical to the ones in the pics and they are asking $375..I am in Ormond Beach and just 3 weeks ago picked up a pair of mint Kappa 8.1's with oak cabinets from the son of the original owner for $240..I am tickled with my score and can't fell good about giving that much for the 7.1 Series II speakers..Now here is why I am posting a reply..After playing them for a few days with them connected from the lower crossover posts to the A outputs on my Onkyo M 504 I was impressed but then I connected the high frequencies on the crossovers to the B outputs which I guess is sort of like biamping and I was thoroughly impressed..They really opened up and overtook my JBL 4312's, Polk Audio SDA 2's, Allison Model 2's, and Kevek ES 10's as my main listening speakers..I will have to say though the Allison 2's being played through my Mcintosh 4100 is pretty damn nice sounding too..Just warmer sounding which is nice for a change sometimes
 
I also have a pair of Infinity Kappa 7.1 Series II speakers and am using them in a home theater setup. I have them running in a bi-amped configuration from an onkyo receiver. I used to have a center channel but got rid of it after biamping the speakers and putting them close to either side of the tv. All of the center channel information goes to the left and right speakers. With the tweeter and mid range close to the center line of the tv the imaging is very accurate. I bought the speakers new from circuit city several years ago and have used them with several different amps and receiver. They can handle more power than you would think. Just realized how old the post is but I am going to reply anyway.
